The new motherboard series from Gigabyte is a good example of the splendours and miseries of the P55 chipset. On the one hand, LGA1156 is a decent general-purpose platform. On the other hand, any effort to make anything original out of it results in compromises. However, solving issues like that is a good chance for motherboard makers to show what they are capable of.

ASUS is known for many things; they make great enthusiast class motherboards and add-in GPUs. But how many people know they also make workstation and server class products? - We have known about this for a while and have finally gotten one in (complete with a socket 1156 Xeon for the CPU) for testing in our lab.

As everyone knows, AMD just recently pushed their hexa-core Phenom II X6 out the door. This new CPU is a $300 six core piece of silicon that promises performance at a low price. The opinions were mixed about how well it managed this feat, but there is no question that AMD has pushed out the top end chipset for this CPU in the form of the 890FX.

We have had more than a few ASRock board in the lab. We have even had the folks from ASRock stop by to talk to us about their products. So it comes as no surprise that ASRock has been one of the ones to send out their IGP carrying AM3 boards that are claiming full support for the Phenom II X6. As we have found out, though, not all boards that support the X6 can do so with style.

The ASRock systems we looked at last year made use of Intel Atom technology, undoubtly the most talked about CPU of 2009, but fast forward and ASRock has decided to put the Atom to rest for now with this generation and has gone with the faster Core i3 mobile processor. This should provide a boost in performance compared to the older models, but it’s not just all about performance, though.

Have you ever known someone that just has to tinker with things? You know the guy I am talking about. It is never good enough. There is always one more tweak, hack, or adjustment to be done to get that few extra MHz out of their systems. Well, imagine a room full of the same people. This is what you get when you talk about ASUS’ R&D team. ASUS makes some great boards, but to the R&D team it is still not enough.

It is said that system builders like "no-frills" motherboards on top-class chipsets, because this way they get a chance to improve PC specifications for a low price. Well, the same can be said about users who build their PCs on their own. Not a lot of them are willing to pay for features they don't need.

So you need more CPU power than what a single Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition processor can provide? Look no further than the EVGA Classified SR-2 motherboard. Anyone who has been following along the enthusiast motherboard industry knows exactly what this motherboard is all about. We take it for a spin with two high end Hexa-core Xeon processors and look what kind of performance you can expect if you can afford a platform like this!
