We move from one Z97 motherboard into another. Let's see what ASRock is doing via the Z97 Extreme4. Read on for Shawn's full thoughts on this new board.

Intel's latest chipset is the Z97, and today we check out our first Z97 motherboard coming from ASUS in the form of the SABERTOOTH MARK 1. Let's go!"

ASUS tries to cover all the bases in the enthusiast market, and their TUF series motherboards are aimed at those who prize toughness and stability. Built with military-spec capacitors, chokes, and MOSFETs, and features such as extra ESD (electrostatic discharge) resistance, the Sabertooth Z97 Mark 1 motherboard also includes ASUS’ unique Thermal Armor system and a custom processor to monitor the board’s voltages and temperatures, which is part of the Thermal Radar 2 system. Of course it also includes features common to their other motherboards such as the Digi+ fully digital power system and their best-in-class UEFI BIOS to control it all. A five-year warranty tops it all off.

With Intel’s NDA now expired and Z97 chipset based motherboards now rolling out at major retailers (with Intel’s new Haswell Refresh CPUs following suit), today we’ll be reviewing our first Z97 motherboard, the MSI Z97 Gaming 7. Like MSI’s Z87 series motherboards, MSI’s strategy for the Z97 is similar in that they’ll be producing...

The way I see it if something is worth doing, it is worth doing well. When it comes to enthusiast hardware, either overclocking or gaming, hardware makers need to reach beyond the target communities and spend some effort advertising their hardware and events.

With the Z87 launch, Asus made a few big changes with their mainstream motherboard line, the biggest being the change to the gold color scheme. That change came with a mixed response but the high quality and big feature set that Asus includes on all of their boards they were still very popular. With the Z97 launch, they have stuck with the gold theme but they have softened the color slightly to make it a little less polarizing. Today I will be taking a deeper look at the Z97-A, one of Asus’s mid ranged mainstream boards. I can’t wait to see what they changed for the Z97 launch and to see how the softer gold looks as well.

A few years back GIGABYTE unveiled the X58A-OC, this was the first board in the ‘OC’ series of motherboards. The X58A-OC was a very stripped down board that had only the bare essentials to it. Since the X58A-OC GIGABYTE has been including the mainstream features that will allow the OC motherboards to fit into a system for day to day usage. Today we have the latest iteration of the OC series, the GIGABYTE Z97X-SOC Force. The GIGABYTE Z97X-SOC Force is based on the latest and greatest Intel Z97 chipset with all the bells and whistles that come with it...

Yesterday Intel introduced its new processors which are a refresh of the current Haswell chips. Along with these new processors two new motherboard chipsets are being introduced, the H97 and the Z97. For many of the motherboard manufacturers this is the time to introduce their new motherboards to replace the current H87 and Z87 based models. We compared no less than 19 boards from ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI.

Typically, Intel keeps their chipset launches timed with new CPUs but todays (official) launch of the Z997 chipset does not come with shiny new silicon from Intel. There are rumors of launch days for a Haswell refresh but as of now, there isn’t anything official. Even without new CPUs we can still take a look at the latest in motherboards. To start things off, today I will be taking a look at MSI’s Z97 Gaming 5. With their new naming scheme we can tell right away that this is a gaming motherboard (of course) and the 5 is their entry level full ATX board with a 7 and a 9 that will round out the line. I’m excited to see what has changed and what remained the same!
