The second generation of AMD A-Series APUs is now among us. Hopefully you have been able to read our articles about the newest AMD Trinity Processors. Those APUs are nice, but they amount to nothing without a motherboard to pair them with. At Benchmark Reviews, we tested those APUs with the Gigabyte F2A85X-UP4 Socket FM2 A85X Motherboard. While the A85X chipset brings a few minor changes to the FCH, Gigabyte has added a lot of their own features to the F2A85X-UP4 motherboard to ensure that it meets all of the needs of early FM2 adopters.

Designed for overclocking, usage of high grade military components and extreme durability are a few of the slogans the marketing people like to use to label a new product. The catchier the better, all of course to draw the attention of any potential buyer. Sometimes it's only the inclusion of an overclocking tool on the included driver CD that makes up for some of the bold PR claims. However for the enthusiast crowd almost each motherboard manufacturer has got a board or even an entire lineup specifically built with the highest quality components, OC friendly BIOSes and idem ditto board layouts. Sadly most of them boards retail at a steep price, as most OC designed boards are at the top of the lineup. Prices of over 350 dollars are quite common for an ATX format OC board. The Big Bang series are available already since the release of Intel's P55 chipset, MSI's range that are targeting gamers and enthusiasts. The Intel Z77 chipset based version is baptized as the BIG BANG Z77 MPOWER. Time to find out how this board reacts to the treatment at the Shrimps lab.

In this review we will be looking at an excellent example of what a well rounded motherboard should look like the Gigabyte Z77X UD4H. For those familiar with the Gigabyte line up you'll realize the UD4 is a mainstream motherboard designed for power users who want a little more from their system.

The ASUS P8Z77-V LK is a mainstream socket LGA1155 motherboard targeted to the "Ivy Bridge" processors (third-generation Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors). Let's see what this motherboard has to offer.

The main difference with the standard Z77A-GD65 is the Killer E2205 network chip. In our most recent large group test the GD65 already earned the Hardware.Info Silver Award in the category 'deluxe, but still affordable'. And like the Z77A-GD65, the new Gaming board made an excellent impression. However, the limited number of new features don't justify the higher price in our opinion. If you really want a KillerNic network card, then you should go for this MSI gaming motherboard, because it's a lot cheaper than the Gigabyte's special gaming Z77-board with the same chip.

Today we take a look at two boards which look to offer a value option in the Z87 market while maintaining as many features as possible from high end products. First up is Gigabytes Z87-D3HP and then we have the MSI Z87-G45 Gaming. Both will be tested in a selection of synthetic and real world tests which include Crysis 3, Grid 2 and the brand new PCMark 8… all with the i7-4770K on board.

As we trundle through the stack of Z87 boards we have for review, we find ourselves picking up the Z87X-UD3H and chucking it onto the test bench, but not before taking a look at what Gigabyte offer with it in terms of design, specifications and added accessories that are bundled in.
Now we're not expecting too much from the UD3H as it is at the lower-end of the scale but still has some high quality features in terms of SLI/CrossFire support, DualBIOS, USB 3.0 connectivity and even some features aimed at those wishing to dabble in overclocking. Couple the overclocking features with the Ultra Durable technology and sufficient sized heatsinks, and we may be pleasantly surprised by the UD3H and what it has to offer in terms of pushing its connected hardware to the limits.
As with all of our reviews, we will start by taking a look at what is on offer with the Z87X-UD3H before moving on to the board itself and taking a detailed look at all of its features before stepping into the BIOS to see if anything is new and shiny. Once we have all of this out of the way, we can start pushing the hardware to its limits and once a 100% stable ground has been found, we can start benchmarking our whole test suite at the overclocked speeds as well as stock to see how things compare.
Join us as we have a look at the Z87X-UD3H from Gigabyte, as we have a feeling that this board has a few tricks up its sleeve and may be able to keep up with the big boys, and if my sources are right at the time of writing this, it should be very attractively priced as well, meaning that we could have a great contender for an all around board that ticks all the right boxes, but lets not get ahead of ourselves and get into the aesthetics side of things first.
