The AMD 890GX chipset is obviously an evolutional solution called to put company's product line in order and introduce the new Southbridge. Judging by the features of the latter, it will let manufacturers make motherboards with rich enough features and moderate cost prices.
The art of the high-end enthusiast motherboard is one practiced by only a few major manufacturers. While most every aftermarket motherboard has some sort of overclocking ability, there are only a select few that push things to the extreme. Nach unserem Test des MSI P55-GD55 betrachten wir heute ein weiteres Mainboard für Intels Sockel LGA1156: Das ECS H57H-MUS. Diese Hauptplatine im Micro-ATX-Format setzt auf Intels H57 Chipsatz und erweitert dessen Fähigkeiten um SATA 6 Gb/s und USB 3.0. Ein klarer Vorteil im Vergleich zum P55-Chipsatz ist hierbei, dass der H57 den Grafikkern der Clarkdale-CPUs nutzen kann.
Not that long ago AMD launched the Phenom II X6; with it they launched the 890FX chipset. This is the top-of-the-line chipset for the AM3 socket. It also rounded out the upper end for AMD. Now they are pushing out their mid-range boards featuring their 880G Northbridge and SB850 Southbridge. These are a lower cost combination that should still offer good performance to any AMD CPU that can fit into the AM3 socket.
It was a few months ago that we reviewed the MSI 890GXM-G65 micro-ATX AM3 motherboard, and while the 890GX was the first of AMD's newest chipsets to be released this year, it was far from the last. The latest to join the 800-series lineup are the 880G and 870 mainstream boards, as well as the flagship 890FX. MSI's implementation of the 890FX chipset offers many of the same features that the 890GXM does, such as their Heatpipe Thermal Design, Military Class Components, OC Genie Technology, 140W CPU Support and Active Phase Switching for better power efficiency. Even so, they've reserved a few special features just for their flagship model, like DrMOS for superior power handling capability, improved Military Class Components, Unlock CPU Core support, Real Time OC Dial and Winki, a Linux-based instant-on OS.
When AMD brought out the new 8xx series chipset they did things in an odd way. Their first release was the 890GX. This was a high-end version of the chipset, but it had an IGP (internal graphics processor) which is not normally how things work. For some reason, this has been the path that AMD has taken. Not that long after the release of the 890GX (and the later the 890FX) we are down to the 870 flavor of the chipset.

Eine Übertaktung kommt bei diesen Systemen allerdings nur selten in Frage, da hierbei vielmehr ein niedriger Stromverbrauch gefragt ist.
Im aktuellen Testbericht des Sapphire IPC-AM3DD785G Mainboards geht es also weniger um eine möglichst hohe Übertaktung, sondern vor allem um die Verbrauchswerte und die Einsatzfähigkeit in kleinen Systemen.
