Today we are looking at the Gigabyte X79S-UP5-WIFI, an X79 motherboard based on the Intel C606 chipset. On paper this looks to be perfect as the foundation for a high end workstation system. Intel have also supplied an Xeon E5 2660 processor, an 8 core chip with hyperthreading support. How does this system handle a variety of tasks, including Studio Max 2011, Cinema 4D, video encoding and even some high definition gaming when paired up with a flagship 6GB discrete graphics card?
Motherboards
It's been a while since we've looked at an X79 Express based motherboard, but this one from GIGABYTE is a little different since it uses the different Intel C606 chipset.

The X79-UD5 from GIGABYTE also marks the last of our X79 boards that we received at launch, bringing the total to 12 X79 motherboards since the launch of the new high end chipset from Intel. We've got more boards on the way, but they'll be slightly delayed. For now we'll be finishing our massive X79 motherboard run with the X79-UD5.

Today we will be looking at an X79 motherboard from Gigabyte, the GA-X79-UD3. The UD3 represents Gigabyte's entry level model on the X79 platform but if processor price didn't already tip you off, LGA 2011 is an all-around expensive platform. For example, pricing on this entry-level board starts around $250 - more along the lines of what you'd expect to pay for a premium P67 board.

Gigabyte has released four motherboard models for the new socket 2011 platform, the X79-UD3, the X79-UD5, the X79-UD7, and the G1.Assassin2, targeted to the most high-end processors Intel offer for desktops today, the Core i7 "Sandy Bridge-E" models. Let's take a look at the X79-UD3, which is the only ATX model Gigabyte is offering right now.

Even though main focus is lately on Ivy Bridge, let's not forget about Intel's High End range based on the X79 chipset. One of the main drawbacks of Socket 2011 is the total platform cost. Besides the quad core i7-3820, the hexacores versions cost a pretty penny. On top of that, most of the X79 mainstream boards are far from cheap. Prices of 250 euros and more are pretty common. Luckily for us Gigabyte and ASRock have got 'let's call them a more" budget friendly motherboard in their X79 lineup. Gigabyte's type numbering has always been kept pretty simple. Today's UD3 board is the entry board for their limited socket 2011 series. Limited, because Gigabyte only has got 3 boards left in the X79 range : the UD3, UD5 and a gamer orientated G1 Assasin 2 board. The X79-UD7 board has been EOL'ed. And till now there's still no sign of the X79-UD5 S(erver) version. But does a "cheap" board mean that the quality or performance is inferior ? Time to find out what this X79-UD3 has got in store for us.
Motherboards
Gigabyte’s lineup of Intel X79 or Sandy Bridge-E motherboards is only made up of four boards. For gamers there is the G1 Assassin 2, X79-UD7-OC for overclockers, and X79-UD5 for enthusiasts. This brings us to the X79-UD3 which is Gigabyte’s entry-level and least expensive Intel X79 motherboard coming it at $249. Sandy Bridge-E is Intel’s high-end platform and the X79 chipset is much improved over its P67/Z68 counterparts. You now have 40 PCI-Express 3.0 lanes and quad-channel memory. That means with this board you can easily throw in up to 32GB of DDR3 and run 4-way Crossfire or SLI right out of the box. Also this is the first time we will see Gigabyte’s 3D BIOS. Read on as we inspect the X79-UD3 Motherboard.
