The focus of today's review is the miniITX, 17cm square, Gigabyte GA-E350N-USB3 AMD Fusion motherboard. This platform is based on a dual-core netbook processor from AMD called the AMD Fusion E-350 'Zacate' APU. The processor includes an entry level Radeon HD6310 integrated graphics core with 80 shader processors that is clocked at 492MHz.

Not only are we going to throw it through our regular testing, but we are stepping up our CPU cooling and going sub ambient to overclock. Today we are going to look at the Asus P8Z77-V LX motherboard which is designed for users who are looking to build a powerful Z77 without breaking the bank. Even though the specification list isn’t peppered with overclocking features, we are going to see how far we can push the Intel i7-3770K processor.

The Extreme6 is ASRock’s mid-high end performance board, coming in the top 5 of the 12 boards ASRock offers to the consumer market for this platform. With an ATX form factor, it is extremely attractive with gold and silver accents. Claiming to feature everything an overclocker, gamer, or enthusiast would require including SLI and CrossFire support, Digital Power Phases, and support for heavily overclocked RAM. Backing this up is ASRock’s XFast 555 Software suite, which also claims to boost your USB transfer speed and reduce your gaming ping with a single click of your mouse. The Classified SR-X is an overclocking motherboard that doesn't overclock. It's a shame for EVGA, but really the only honest conclusion here is that the Classified SR-X is a pointless motherboard. When we asked, EVGA informed us that it was unknown to them during the development of this board that the Xeons would be completely locked. The manufacturer still hopes that unlocked Xeons will be released at some point in the future, but from Intel's perspective we see no reason for that actually happening. EVGA will likely be waiting in vain.
Rising energy costs, a changing usage model, increased processor functionality, increased processing power per watt and clock tick means the old big box/high end CPU combo is becoming a thing of the past. ASUS is following this curve by offering a solution (one of many) in the low power E45M1-I. By building on the AMD Brazos platform, in this case the 1650Mhz AMD E450 APU, ASUS “brings it” with functionality and tweak-ability. This setup is not a benchmarking monster or a gaming giant (not much gaming at all) but it appears that it could be a real winner where utility is concerned.
On our test bench today is the latest product from the ASUS RoG brand, their Maximus V Formula motherboard. We will be comparing it to another Z77 board in a selection of real world and synthetic tests to find out how ASUS look to improve on the base design and how far they have pushed the enthusiast feature set... watercooled heatsinks anyone?
