Motherboards
Micro-ATX motherboards and all things on the smaller form factor have been a big highlight in the past year or so, with Mini-ITX taking the market by storm and manufacturers somehow managing to cram all of the much needed, and wanted components into this much smaller sized boards. Fast forward to the present day and we see the same thing happening all over again with Z87 and Gigabyte, as they have managed to produce a board based around the new chipset, branded under the G1-Killer branding, much like we saw with the Z77 M3 board which we loved by the way.
For those out there wanting 4-way SLI and a full ATX form factor, Gigabyte have a board just for you; the G1.Sniper 5, but for those wanting a much smaller footprint, they have graced us with the G1.Sniper M5. This particular board is set to pack all of the grunt that its big brother incorporates, without any of the drawbacks, and that can be said for improved audio, overclockability, design and overall key features. Of course it doesn't have the ability for quad SLI, but that's why they have its big brother sharing the limelight to cater for that market.
As we work out way through the large stack of Z87 motherboards that we have here, we wanted to make sure that this board was one of the first, because if it's anything like the Z77 G1.Sniper M3 was, then it's going to be a complete animal and may give you a few shocks on the way, as small doesn't necessarily mean underpowered of lacking features, in fact, quite the opposite.
Before we check out the performance though, we need to make our way through the packaging and accessories before we take a look at the board itself and all of its features including its shiny new BIOS that has been implemented. Once this is out of the way, we can get down to the nitty gritty and see how it performs at stock speeds as well as pushing it as far as we can under our testbed conditions, and then of course to see how it performs once it's been pushed to its limits, so lets not delay and get straight into it.

For those familiar with the Gigabyte line up you'll realize the UD4 is a mainstream motherboard designed for power users who want a little more from their system but don't need many of the other features included in the higher-end product offerings.

ASUS’ newest TUF motherboards are built on Intel’s new Z87 chipset, for the new Haswell-based LGA 1150 CPUs. The TUF line emphasizes reliability and durability rather than a cornucopia of consumer features or the ability to reach heroic overclocking levels. Can an enthusiast love the SABERTOOTH Z87? Benchmark Reviews checks this board out to see what makes it special enough to include in your next rig.

When it comes to the performance of he GIGABYTE Z87X-OC Force Intel Z87 motherboard, it was right on track with our other Z87 boards. Ultimately though, the GIGABYTE Z87X-OC isn't designed for use at stock speeds. The GIGABYTE Z87X-OC Force is meant for those that like to push their processor to the limits with Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) over and over. That's where the GIGABYTE Z87X-OC Force will shine...

The G1.Sniper B5 is an affordable Haswell motherboard in Gigabyte's gaming line. Partially due to the fact it uses the Intel B85 chipset, Gigabyte was able to keep the price below £100. But were they able to keep the gaming DNA intact?

The Z87H3-A3X motherboard from ECS takes part of their entry-level DRONE series and is equipped with 6 power phases, Intel I217-V Gigabit LAN controller, ALC1150 with support of the Creative Sound Blaster Cinema software and 2-way Crossfire and SLI support. This all comes at an affordable price for more budget-oriented gamers.

The Fatal1ty Z87 Killer is a top mid-range motherboard for socket LGA1150 Intel CPUs. It comes with a high-end audio codec, an Atheros Killer E2200 Gigabit Ethernet chip (hence the name of the product), three PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots, six SATA-600 ports, and six USB 3.0 ports. Let's take a look at it.

AMD are rumoured to be exiting the high end desktop market with the FX series of processors on the AM3+ socket expected to be AMD’s last range of standalone CPU products. Of course the main reason for that decision by AMD, if it does turn out to be true, is that AMD simply cannot compete with Intel at the highest end market segment. However, when it comes to APUs AMD have a distinct advantage thanks to the advanced integrated graphical performance and so AMD’s APU platform isn’t going anywhere any time soon. AMD’s current APU products for the desktop platform are codename “Richland” and they bear the AX-6XXX monikers. The predecessors to those were “Trinity” which were of the AX-5XXX naming system. Of course Trinity and Richland APUs are virtually identical – using the same graphics VLIW4 architecture and the same 32nm Piledriver CPU cores, the main difference between the two is higher clock speeds and improved power efficiency. They are physically identical, both supporting the FM2 and FM2+ sockets on the A55, A75, A85X and A88X chipsets.
What’s coming after Richland is Kaveri, expected early next year Kaveri will run on the FM2+ socket with A88X and A85X motherboards. Today we have with us one of those newer Kaveri-Ready AMD desktop APU motherboards running off the A88X chipset. Of course the fact Kaveri isn’t here yet means we are using AMD’s best Richland APU, the A10 6800K, to test this motherboard as AMD Trinity and Richland APUs are compatible with all FM2+ motherboards. Specifically we are reviewing Gigabyte’s G1 Sniper A88X motherboard today, this motherboard is Gigabyte’s best gaming offering for AMD’s APU platform featuring support for Trinity, Richland and Kaveri APUs, up to 64GB of 2400MHz memory, high quality audio with interchangeable op-amps, CrossFire support and support for up to 8 SATA III 6Gbps devices. Gigabyte have certainly left no stone unturned as they have tried to cram every feature a gamer could want into an attractively priced package. Today Intel officially begin the run-up to the launch of their next generation platform by allowing the chance to look at some of the boards which will support the new shininess. So today we have taken two boards, one from ASUS and another from Gigabyte which are designed to appeal to enthusiasts/modders and gamers.
