We're getting through the boards, though, and the latest one for us to fire up comes from ASRock and follows the Fatal1ty series. The ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Professional looks the part, but today we'll see how it performs with the new AMD FX-8150 from AMD.
Asus have always been one of those brands that wants to cater for every market, and that's not a bad thing, certainly not. It gives the end user a bigger selection to chose from and lets Asus identify their customers, meaning that can then manufacture their products to suit the end user more. This is why Asus have made many boards ready for the Intel X79 launch, and with different boards aimed at different markets, it allows consumers to spend their money more wisely.
Intel’s Z68 platform has proven popular with the enthusiast audience, as the combination of stellar performance and competitive pricing is tough to match. In September Gigabyte released the GA Z68AP D3, a budget priced board which targeted a huge audience and I really thought it offered great value for money.
If you've followed what goes on with the ASRock model numbers, you would know that the -M refers to the board using the mATX Format. The mATX boards from ASRock, though, don't only bring with it a smaller board, they also bring with it a cheaper price and at the time of writing the ASRock Extreme4-M is the cheapest X79 motherboard available at Newegg, coming in at $218.99 US.
Today we are taking a look at the latest ‘Pure Black’ X79N motherboard from Sapphire, based around Intel’s enthusiast X79 platform (LGA2011). We have reviewed many Sapphire motherboards in the past and have admired their build quality and overall level of performance, even if their bios configurations have been lagging a little behind industry leaders such as ASUS. We are pairing this motherboard up with Sapphire’s high end AMD HD7970.
Today we are going to look at a motherboard from the other end of the ASRock range, the Z68M-ITX/HT motherboard, which occupies the increasingly popular Mini-ITX form factor. This makes it ideal for use in environments where space is restricted, mainly in small form factor and home theatre PC systems.

Gigabyte’s lineup of Intel X79 or Sandy Bridge-E motherboards is only made up of four boards. For gamers there is the G1 Assassin 2, X79-UD7-OC for overclockers, and X79-UD5 for enthusiasts. This brings us to the X79-UD3 which is Gigabyte’s entry-level and least expensive Intel X79 motherboard coming it at $249. Sandy Bridge-E is Intel’s high-end platform and the X79 chipset is much improved over its P67/Z68 counterparts. You now have 40 PCI-Express 3.0 lanes and quad-channel memory. That means with this board you can easily throw in up to 32GB of DDR3 and run 4-way Crossfire or SLI right out of the box. Also this is the first time we will see Gigabyte’s 3D BIOS. The Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H-WB WiFi is unique in the sense that it includes a PCIe expansion card that offers Bluetooth 4.0 and IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity. This board is obviously aimed at those with mobile devices like the Applie iPhone 4S that already support Bluetooth 4.0 for quick wireless data transfers. This board also features a 12 phase power VRM design that is cooled by a passive cooler that is interlinked with a heatpipe. We also like that the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H-WB WiFi has two LAN ports and that one of them uses an Intel GbE LAN chip. We've had good luck with Intel controllers and not all boards use them...
