The introduction of the Core i7 processors into the market marked the beginning of one of the largest redesign feats for motherboard manufacturers. ASUS was one of these motherboard manufacturers that attempted to redefine the expectations of performance. Today TechwareLabs will take a look at their budget model - P6T. Will it stack up to the expectations or will it be a miss for ASUS?
With the release of the X58 chipset around 10 months ago, a lot has changed in the world of computer hardware. Suddenly, gamers and hardcore enthusiasts were able to purchase a motherboard which supported both SLI and CrossFire, were able to run memory in an all-new triple-channel scenario and last but not least, make use of the awesome performance the i7 series processor offered. Although many would have liked to upgrade to the X58/i7 platform, doing it inexpensively was one of the largest roadblocks caused by this new technology.
Like every other motherboard maker on the planet, ASUS maintains multiple product lines and inside each of these lines they have different vertical markets. For example, ASUS has their Republic of Gamers line that runs at the very top of the heap while their mainstream line runs with the tag of Extreme Phase or gets the Deluxe tag to denote extra features.
As of writing, Socket 1366 is still Intel’s top performer, and with support for triple channel memory and Gulftown, that won’t change with early Sandy Bridge offerings. After all, Sandy Bridge is a mainstream release that isn’t aimed at high-end enthusiasts. That said, if you want the fastest system currently available and you want it right now, Socket 1366 is where it’s at. Based on Intel’s X58 chipset, Socket 1366 was released in late 2008 and has seen continued support from both Intel and board manufacturers ever since. Today we will be taking a look at an X58 board from ASUS, the P6X58D-E
The P6X58-E Pro is ASUS’ next iteration of their popular Intel X58 based motherboard. This board supports the Core i7 LGA1366 CPU (up to 6 cores) with DDR3 memory up to 48GB. 3-way SLI/Quad GPU CrossfireX is available and ASUS was kind enough to include both the 2-way and 3-way bridges. The board is currently being sold for about $250 which puts it on par with most performance X58-based motherboards from other manufacturers. As a current happy owner of the previous version of this board, the P6X58-D, I am quite excited to see what improvements ASUS has made to this already very solid performance-based platform.
Although not usually covered by the enthusiast media, ASUS has a great line up of Workstation boards that have just as many features (including overclocking) as their non-professional line up. We have taken a look at one of these before; the P7P55 WS SuperComputer and it was a fast board.
In our days of multi-part cooling systems, original designs and high-speed interfaces, ASUS still has a few spartan products to offer. ASUS P7H55-M Pro is a decent, unpretentious product. While it's not quite up-to-date, you may still put it to good use, if you only need the necessary features the H55 chipset already has.
On our test bench today we have one of the latest products from ASUS, the P7H55-M/USB3. Based on Intel's Socket 1156 and the H55 chipset this Micro-ATX board includes the latest features such as SATA 6GB/s and USB 3.0. We will be putting it through a selection of real world tests to find out how well it performs against a comparable H57 model when using the Core i5-655K.
Ok, so the Intel H5x chipset is nothing new. However, as there are a ton of boards based on these there is no shortage of new boards popping up. We have taken a look at a few from GIGABYTE, ASUS, ASRock and Foxconn. Today we are returning to take another look at an H55 offering from ASUS.
