This motherboard produces a positive impression rather than negative. It cannot boast of extraordinary functionality, but it has the minimum necessary features, it has modern components of really high quality, and it's affordable.

The 4770K offers quite possibly the highest per-clock performance numbers of any consumer-grade processor currently on the market. It’s just that fact which makes Haswell’s multiplier-unlocked Core i7 a plausible option for workstation applications. And with that possible usage scenario comes the requirement for workstation-grade LGA 1150 motherboards. Is ASRock’s flagship LGA 1150 motherboard, the Z87 Extreme11/ac, the perfect partner for a powerful, Haswell-based workstation?

Whilst at CeBIT earlier in the year, I swung by the MSI booth to see what products they had to show off to the world. Now for most people that attended the show, being able to look around MSI's booth was not going to be possible as they were situated in an area that was out of bounds to the general public, meaning that only those associated with the industry, like us at eTeknix, could have a look. Whilst on their stand, there was something that caught the eye and in some respect looked a little odd. Typically when we see MSI motherboards from a glance we expect to see the blue or yellow highlighting that appears on their boards, however one cabinet housed something different and in some respects a little bit special.

Let's take a look at one of the first socket 1155 motherboards that will reach the market, the MSI P67A-GD65 (a.ka. MS-7681 Ver 2.0), based on the forthcoming P67 chipset for future Intel processors based on the "Sandy Bridge" architecture. The highlights of this motherboard include four USB 3.0 ports, four SATA-600 ports, high-end components in the voltage regulator circuit, and nice overclocking features.

ASUS released a very extensive range of Z87 motherboards for Intel’s new Haswell platform. To date we’ve already reviewed their Z87 Sabertooth and Z87-C motherboards and today we’ve got something new from their Republic of Gamers series. The ASUS Maximus Formula VI takes a very different stance to the Z87 Sabertooth, with the primary focus being on offering gamers a stylish yet high performance solution. The Maximus VI Formula is as much about the core ASUS principles of reliability, solid overclocking and added functionality as it is about Gamer aesthetics and features. ASUS have put a lot of effort into the “thermal armour-style” shroud which mainly serves aesthetic purposes and they’ve also gone to town on the main heatsink design with a similarly rugged looking aesthetic that combines the worlds of water and air cooling. Other stand out points from a design aspect include the new Supreme FX audio implementation which ASUS claims offers superior audio for gamers, and the extensive connectivity which means virtually every uncovered space on the motherboard is occupied by something important that Gamers can put to good use. For a more in depth overview of all that connectivity you can check the full specifications below.

Today we are looking at the ASRock Fatal1ty X79 Champion – hot on the heels of our analysis of the X79 Extreme11. The Fatal1ty X79 Champion seems to be somewhat of a bargain when compared to the £500 X79 Extreme11 … as it only costs £330. This puts it up against Asus top-of-the range Rampage IV Extreme motherboard which is also designed with serious overclockers in mind.

One of the most belated X79 motherboard has finally arrived in our labs! MSI's Big Bang-XPower II (MS-7737) is a military themed and feature packed monster, designed to be the ultimate board for both extreme overclockers and gamers. We take a first look before our full review next month...
