We check out the small and affordable F2A55-M Trinity board from Asus.

I'm still a fan of the AMD FM1 APU platform, and with the recent launch of the second generation APU 'Trinity' the FM1 platform is a very strong budget play. We could easily pair the GIGABYTE A75-D3H with the AMD A8-3870K APU and 8Gb of Corsair Vengeance memory for under $250 shipped to our door. Toss in a Kington HyperX 3K 120Gb SSD for only $64.99 and you can have yourself a fast system for about the price of the Intel Core i7 3770K processor alone...

When a new chipset comes out almost every motherboard manufacturer releases a slew of motherboards and it is really hard to choose which one is right for you. As it stands right now ASRock has 10 motherboard based on the X79 chipset. Today we are checking out one of ASRock’s mid-range X79 motherboards the X79 Extreme6/GB. It is really hard to call this board mid-range as it has all of the features any enthusiast, gamer or overclocker would want. With its sleek looks, three SLI/CrossFire PCIe 3.0 slots, support for up to 64GB memory and 10 SATA connectors this board means business. The Extreme6 comes in two flavors the normal Extreme6 and the Extreme6/GB. The “GB” version which we are reviewing comes with a PCIe add-in Game Blaster card that features Creative Sound Core3D 7.1 CH HD audio and Broadcom Gigabit LAN. Read on as we take a look!

Intel’s third generation Core integrated processor graphics (IPG) chip, aka Ivy Bridge (IVB), got off to a slow start for us with a set of high-end CPUs not really intended for the home theater PC (HTPC). We still do not have one of the low power Core i3/i5 with HD4000 graphics on hand; now that they are available, H77 based Mini ITX motherboards are much more interesting since the updated platform controller hub (PCH) is required to fully utilize new features like PCIe 3.0 and DDR3-1600. There are several options to choose from, but none include the HTPC specific features like Windows Media Center infrared and HDMI CEC support via specialized headers and third-party hardware like the Intel Media Series DH77DF paired today with 65W Intel Core i7-3770S and i5-2400S IPGs. Not content to differentiate only on those features, it also offers mSATA via a Mini PCIe slot and Firewire (IEEE1394a) and addresses a traditional shortcoming in Intel’s previous Mini ITX boards – support for 95W TDP CPUs.

ASRock have been aggressively targeting the overclocking audience in the last year and we have reviewed many of their motherboards for the Intel Z77 and X79 platform. Today we are focusing on a rather special design, created by overclocking guru Nick Shih specifically for the hardcore Z77 enthusiast audience. Make no mistake, ASRock are now a major force in the motherboard sector and today we overclock the Z77 Formula to the limits, and pair it up with an overclocked GTX680 and 16Gb of 2,666mhz rated memory.

In October last year AMD released the FX8150 Black Edition 8 Core processor which met with a mixed reception. While the chip delivered good performance, it was priced too high and couldn’t compete against equivalent Intel processors.

Now six months on from the Z77 launch manufacturers such as Gigabyte are launching their new generation of products based around the chipset. The top model in Gigabytes family is GA-Z77X-UP7 and we have one on our test bench today. It will be put through a selection of synthetic and real world tests to establish how it compares to a first generation Z77 product.
