The Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H is a top mid-range socket LGA1150 motherboard targeted to the "Haswell" processors (fourth-generation Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors). Let's see what this motherboard has to offer.
The Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H is outfitted with impressive high-end features at a mainstream price. The Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H utilizes Ultra Durable 5 Plus technology, including the use of 10K solid Japanese capacitors, 2x Copper PCB, gold plated CPU brushes, ESD protection on USB and Ethernet ports with one fuse per port design, as well as International Rectifier PWM controllers and PowIRstage ICs. Unlike other mainstream Z87 mainboards, the Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H has a total of ten USB 3.0 ports for unprecedented connective flexibility and also implements On/Off Charge 2 technology for rapid mobile device charging. After speaking to Gigabyte recently about the upcoming boards for Haswell and Z87, they kept telling me that the UD4H was a big focus for them, and I can see why, as it incorporates a brand new colour scheme that has never been tried by them before, and as you can see; it's red and it's sexy.
The UD4H is a mid-range board that incorporates a lot of key features that you'd expect including SLI/CrossFire, strong power delivery to the CPU socket and much more, but what is a board with strong features, if it doesn't look the part? This is a question that Gigabyte asked themselves and decided to go with a radical new design and while a lot of consumers will be quick to judge that they've copied the Asus ROG or MSI Gaming series boards, we can say from first-hand, it looks nothing like them and is actually quite subtle, in a "slap you round the face" kind of way, and that's a good thing, as it allows the board to appeal to many different markets.
For those wanting a mid-range board with strong features and great potential, we think that the UD4H could be a real contender, and there is only one way to find out, so follow us as we delve into this review.
As usual, we will be taking a look at the box and any added accessories that come bundled with the UD4H before we take a look at the board and its funky new style from a close-up view. Intel’s first Haswell Refresh CPUs have just been recently released, Intel’s Devil’s Canyon (unlocked K series Haswell Refresh) CPUs are expected in just a month or two and rumours going around suggest that Intel’s Broadwell CPUs could even be released this year too – from an enthusiast perspective there has never been a better time to upgrade your motherboard to the latest chipset on the block – Z97. Today we are taking a closer look at our third Z97 motherboard courtesy of Gigabyte, more specifically it is their Z97X-Gaming 7 motherboard which is their top of the range Gaming Series motherboard, although they will have other more premium boards from their Ultra Durable and OC ranges but those aren’t targeted specifically at gamers. For anyone used to the Gigabyte G1 Gaming series of motherboards you may be surprised by two obvious aesthetic changes. The first is the colour scheme has shifted from green and black to red and black. The second is that that G1 Series Bullets and Skulls have been replaced by the “Gigabyte Eye” typically seen on their VGA series products. For some this may be a great move by Gigabyte, moving towards the more desired and traditional “gaming” red and black colours, but for others it might be a bit frustrating to see ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI all offering red and black as the primary colour scheme on their gaming motherboards. What might be even more worrying is that MSI and Gigabyte both have Z97 gaming motherboard models dubbed “Gaming 7″, which will no doubt serve to confuse consumers.
