With Sandy Bridge in a state of hiatus for the next couple of months, a specific sector of our audience may decide to opt for the previous-generation platform which is now thoroughly tried and tested. These people are more likely to be building a media system which doesn’t require all the processing grunt that Sandy Bridge has to offer.

Earlier on today we visited the GIGABYTE headquarters in Taipei and had a good old fashioned full look at its newest motherboard that will be officially launched next week at CeBIT in Germany. We are talking about the X58A-OC aka Hi Cookie's baby. GIGABYTE has long wanted to produce a motherboard dedicated strictly to overclockers - that wait is now over. We are talking about a board that doesn't just overclock well, but one that cuts out the crap and nonsense and just gets down to the business of high-end overclocking.

Let's dive into GIGABYTE's P67A-UD4. This is the "little brother" to the UD7 that we have already told you about. The P67A-UD4 is sort of a scaled back version of the UD7. You get dual x8 SLI and Crossfire and lose a few other features on top of that. Of course, it is not marketed to the same high-end crowd as the UD7, so it does not need the same feature set. But even without Three-Way SLI the UD4 is still a member of the Ultra Durable line and has a great feature set of its own.

All i heard last year was that 2011 was going to be the year of the tablet, and whilst i can semi-agree with that, i don't believe it's as clear cut as that. I think 2011 is the year of small products, not just tablets, but smaller form factor gadgets and components including motherboards.

The P67 Professional Motherboard from ASRock is the Fatal1ty branded product from the series and comes with a lot of features like Digital PWM, XFast USB Technology, V16+2 CPU Power Phases, no less than 6 USB 3.0 ports and 6 SATA3, C.C.O., THX TruStudio Pro, and the unique Fatal1ty Mouse Port, which allows us to set the desired mouse polling rate, up to 1000Hz.

The Z68 is a little bit of a funny chipset; it's one that we didn't hear heaps about, but as the time has come closer it's of course gained more and more momentum. From the word go we're already seeing companies offer quite strong looking versions of the chipset in various motherboards and you almost get this sense that the Z68 chipset is going to be a nice replacement for the P67 which has this slight negative stigma regarding the SATA-II port issue that was discovered just after launch.

LucidLogix Virtu opens up the possibility of significantly accelerated video transcoding via Intel QuickSync to smart users who install a purpose-bred discreet PCI Express x16 videocard for 3D gaming. That's all well and good, but the Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 does not have onboard video ports... What happens to Virtu? Can you still use LucidLogic Virtu to accelerate video transcoding? We'll get to the GA-Z68X-UD5-B3's limitations in these respects.....

Gigabyte are widely regarded as one of the biggest computer component manufacturers in the world, especially in the motherboard market. They cater for all of the latest AMD and Intel platforms including AM3, socket 1156, 1155 and 1366 and with Sandy Bridge taking over, we still believe that 1366 has some life left in it.
