With Intel's 7-series chipset a little over a year old, the latest 8-series offers only a few minor improvements. There's some power savings to be had, along with more built-in ports for USB 3.0 and 6Gb/s SATA. Other than that, there's not much to distinguish from the previous 1155 socket generation. The motherboard we have for review today comes to us from Gigabyte in the form of their Z87X-D3H. They offer no less than fifteen different Z87 based chipset motherboards, everything from mini-ITX boards with onboard Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, to their top-of-the-line G1 Sniper gaming motherboards, and the D3H falls somewhere in the middle.
We check out the latest OC board from GIGABYTE under the new Z87 chipset and find out what the Z87X-OC can do when put to the test.
Gigabyte have a large stack of motherboards launching for Z87, and at the top of that stack is the overclocking based motherboards including the Z87X-FORCE and the Z87X-OC which have some fundamental differences. The Force is aimed at pro overclockers who will constantly be pushing hardware to its limits while using extreme cooling methods including LN2.
The Z87X-OC that we have today, while it can do that, is aimed at multiple markets, allowing average users the facility to use it while pro overclockers can dabble at the same time, and vice versa. With that in mind, as it is an overclocking based motherboard, we find it utilises that funky orange colour scheme that made their X58OC and Z77X-UP7 boards famous.

When it comes to the performance of he GIGABYTE Z87X-OC Force Intel Z87 motherboard, it was right on track with our other Z87 boards. Ultimately though, the GIGABYTE Z87X-OC isn't designed for use at stock speeds. The main difference is that the Z87X-OC Force is equipped with a PLX PEX8747 chip that can double the 16 PCI-Express 3.0 lanes from the CPU. Because of that, the four orange PCI-Express slots can be configured 16/0/16/0, 16/0/8/8 and 8/8/8/8 which supports 4-way SLI and 4-way Crossfire. The black PCI-Express x16 slot is directly connected to the CPU, so if you have one video card you want to overclock you have 0 extra latency. It's a clever solution we've seen before with MSI and ASRock.

We look at our first GIGABYTE Z87 board and check out just what the new Z87X-UD3H brings to the table.
As we trundle through the stack of Z87 boards we have for review, we find ourselves picking up the Z87X-UD3H and chucking it onto the test bench, but not before taking a look at what Gigabyte offer with it in terms of design, specifications and added accessories that are bundled in.
Now we're not expecting too much from the UD3H as it is at the lower-end of the scale but still has some high quality features in terms of SLI/CrossFire support, DualBIOS, USB 3.0 connectivity and even some features aimed at those wishing to dabble in overclocking. Couple the overclocking features with the Ultra Durable technology and sufficient sized heatsinks, and we may be pleasantly surprised by the UD3H and what it has to offer in terms of pushing its connected hardware to the limits.
As with all of our reviews, we will start by taking a look at what is on offer with the Z87X-UD3H before moving on to the board itself and taking a detailed look at all of its features before stepping into the BIOS to see if anything is new and shiny. Once we have all of this out of the way, we can start pushing the hardware to its limits and once a 100% stable ground has been found, we can start benchmarking our whole test suite at the overclocked speeds as well as stock to see how things compare.
Join us as we have a look at the Z87X-UD3H from Gigabyte, as we have a feeling that this board has a few tricks up its sleeve and may be able to keep up with the big boys, and if my sources are right at the time of writing this, it should be very attractively priced as well, meaning that we could have a great contender for an all around board that ticks all the right boxes, but lets not get ahead of ourselves and get into the aesthetics side of things first.
