There is no doubt that the ASUS Republic of Games line-up is one of the best on the market. Sure, you can get a good board from this company or that, but as far as a single line goes, you would be hard pressed to find better than the Republic of Gamers. We have had the pleasure of testing out most of the current crop and are now able to take a look at another one.

The Rampage II Gene was a pint sized rocket of a board delivering all the performance and features you'd expect from a full ATX flagship in a Micro ATX format. With the introduction of important features like USB 3.0 and 6Gbps SATA, the Gene II is starting to look a little overpriced and outdated however, particularly when compared to other products available like the excellent P6X58D-E we reviewed not long ago. Asus addresses this problem with the release of the Rampage III Gene, essentially a next generation update to its predecessor.

We know several overclockers that swear by Asus products and turn their noses up at even considering a different motherboard brand. After having used the Rampage III Extreme for what it was intended we can see where this comes from.
Motherboards
The Rampage series has included Asus' flagship Intel motherboards for the past three generations, pushing the boundaries of what is possible when it comes to overclocking and innovation. Today we have the latest iteration in the ITShootout labs; the Rampage III Extreme. With features like mobile phone powered overclocking, insane voltage support and of course USB3.0 and SATA 6Gbps this new board represents the finest X58 has to offer.

Asus's ROG (Republic of Gamers) series motherboards have an unparalleled reputation within the overclocking community and their Rampage III Extreme motherboard is no exception to this. Based on Intel's X58 Express and ICH10R chipsets and updated for support of USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s technology, this ATX board is ready to push any Intel LGA1366 Core i7 processors to its very limits when overclocked.

Sandybridge has been dominating mainstream news in recent months, but Intel’s flagship products are still tied into the X58 platform. After our recent review of the stunning Gigabyte G1 Assassin motherboard, today we turn our attention to the flagship Asus Rampage III Black Edition.
