The much riled and awaited Sandy Bridge platform and Cougar Point chipset were released at the beginning of January, signalling the start of a dominant new era for Intel. Indeed, with AMD’s upcoming Bulldozer lineup still in the process of rolling out, Intel theoretically had six months to saturate and hold a firm grip in the consumer market. The timing could not have been better; a new year, the start of a new decade, and a new architecture released during the holiday season, a time when most consumers are ready to spend their saved up money on a new build, or upgrade. The pieces were in place...but not all of them fell in the right places.

Gigabyte released 11 motherboard models based on the new Intel Z68 chipset. With prices ranging from USD 120 to USD 350, there is a model for any kind of user. We've already seen one of the most expensive models, the Z68X-UD5-B3. Today we are taking a look at one of the mid-range models, the Z68X-UD3H-B3, which supports the Virtu technology.

While everyone waits with baited breath for AMD to release their new range of processors, we felt it was a good time to have a look at another Intel Z68 motherboard – the Gigabyte Z68X-UD7-B3. Gigabyte have earned a good reputation in the industry over the years for producing quality motherboards, alongside MSI and Asus.

The idea behind Intel's SRT was that you could use a smaller SSD drive, say 20GB, and combine that with a larger traditional mechanical drive and the SSD drive would be used as cache which would in turn be faster than just having everything run off the mechanical drive. Overall, it was never going to be as fast as a true SSD-only drive for everything, but it's never going to be as expensive either.

Mit Einführung der aktuellen Prozessorgeneration "Sandy Bridge" kamen viele Neuerungen: Unter anderem durch die Integration einer Grafikeinheit in jedes der Rechenwerke sowie speziellen Modellen mit dem Suffix "k" zum Übertakten. Letztere verfügten gleichzeitig auch über die schnellste Grafikeinheit - Paradox. Denn Intel bot die Nutzung der GPUs mit dem H-Chipsatz, Übertakten hingegen ausschließlich mit dem Unterbau der Linie P. Und Intel sah, dass es gut war. Alle anderen hingegen waren von dieser Lösung weniger überzeugt, weshalb der Hardwareriese beide Funktionen schließlich im Z68-Chipsatz zusammenführt.
