Following our recent look at one of Netgear's Prosafe wireless access points, the WNDAP360, which got a huge thumbs up in our testing, we thought that its worth taking a look at what lies at the heart of each and every network in one form or another and that's the switches. Without these networking multi-sockets, the internet wouldn't be and neither would be modern communications. Switches are the unsung heroes of networks and they have probably the hardest time, ensuring that data goes in the right direction depending on the users needs and their configurations and all at high speed.

Over the last year or so we have shown you pieces of networking hardware that normally reside in the realm of the enterprise network; items like 24 port rack mounted switches, smart switches and of course Power over Ethernet devices. With each of these we have talked about the technology behind them and how this technology is slowly working its way into the home network environment.

Until recently, there were only two types of network switches, un-managed and managed. Today, there is a new class, called Smart Switches. A blend of the two previous extremes, they're targeted to both corporate users and what the industry politely calls "ProSumers". Switches aren't reviewed by the press that often, but they are a necessary part of many home and SMB networks, so we need to look at what's available now and then. NETGEAR is a major player in the networking market, and today Benchmark Reviews looks at the GS110T, one of the less expensive offerings in their ProSafe SmartSwitch line. It's got enough GbE ports to future-proof most home installations, plus two fiber optic interfaces...

The NeoTV MAX comes packed with a bunch of features which will be very attractive to those who don’t own a so-called “Smart TV”. The NeoTV can play 1080p HD video and produce 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround sound, and has built-in WiFi making placement easy. Netgear even includes a full QWERTY keyboard that is on the bottom-side of the remote control. You can even stream 3D movies from Vudu to your television. This all comes in a very small package that rivals the tiny Apple TV...

If you are in the market for an inexpensive connected media streamer, the number of options has exploded recently. A couple weeks back we took a look at Roku’s XS, and today we have the newest member of NETGEAR’s NeoTV lineup - the NTV200. At first glance, the unit’s price ($79.99) and lack of a USB port for local content sets it neatly in the middle of the multitude of players currently available, but breaks from the pack by offering VUDU alongside Netflix and the many other “also ran” applications we have come to expect from this segment.
