On our test bench is a product from Sapphire which contains a NVIDIA GPU... yes, NVIDIA. The Edge-HD is a small ATOM/ION system which Sapphire say could be the smallest PC in the world. We will be putting it though a number of real world tests which include Blu-Ray playback, GPU media encoding and power use to find out whether it meets the needs of the average consumer.

Sapphire are back with their latest generation of mini-PC, the EDGE VS8. Based around AMDs A8 APU we get quad core processing and DirectX 11 graphics, all in an ultra-compact chassis.

Today we are looking at the latest Edge VS8 Mini PC from Sapphire, the follow up to the Edge HD3 which we reviewed earlier this year. The new Edge VS8 is based around an AMD Quad Core A8 1.6ghz APU with onboard HD7600G graphics. Our review sample ships with a large 500GB hard drive and 4GB of DDR3 memory. Is this an ideal solution to as a diminutive ‘general use’ PC when paired up with a High Definition Television set?

Kitguru has reviewed many of the diminutive, versatile Sapphire EDGE systems in the last couple of years. We reviewed the EDGE HD3 in February 2012, powered by the AMD E450 and the EDGE VS8 in December 2012, powered by the AMD A8 4555M APU. Well here’s an alternative to the HTPC and lounge media center, possibly the smallest full scale PC around: the Sapphire Edge Mini PC. It’s about the size of a DVD case and comes packing HDMI out, dual core atom CPU, a 512 MB nVidia ION 2 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 250GB of storage and gigabit ethernet. Should make for an interesting combination. Let’s see how it performs.

Sapphire have always been regarded as one of the key partners for AMD based products, especially in the UK, as some regard them as the biggest AMD partner when it comes to graphics card products. Over the years they have decided to move into other segments in the computer market and today sees us delving into that area as we aren't looking at a graphics card from Sapphire, or even their new ventured market of motherboards which happen to be made for the Intel and AMD platforms but instead we look at another Intel based product from the market leader.
