One of the ultimate goals of a Home Theater PC enthusiast is to achieve a completely silent appliance. There are several ways to achieve this by using low-power motherboards, solid-state drives, and cards that only require passive cooling. Although the components you choose in your system plays a significant part of its silence, the next level of noise reduction is reached when you apply sound dampening material inside your computer.

So earlier on XSReviews we took a look at the Acer Aspire S7, an 11.6″ or 13″ Ultrabook with a super svelte design and powerful hardware but dogged with persistently poor battery life. Today, we’re taking a look at what Acer is doing at a more affordable range of the spectrum with the Acer Aspire V5-571P. There are a few different configurations available here, but we’ll be taking a look at the model equipped with a Core i5 processor, a 500 GB mechanical hard drive, 6 GB of RAM and a touch screen. That puts it on the upper end of configurations available, but reflections upon other aspect should be shared between models.

Almost one year ago now I reviewed the DarbeeVision Darblet HDMI Video Processor and I thought it was a great device but one of my chief complaints was and still is that it’s rather ugly and apparently a company called Salt Labs agrees with me on this as they’ve sent me of the Halite Video Purifier based on the Darblet. The device is virtually the same as the Darblet but it just looks a whole lot better now. The Halite essentially reprocesses your video, any video, movies, games or TV and add further depth cues to it for enhanced depth and realism, and I found that it can make everything just look better overall. The Halite can improve video quality on lower resolution videos and one of the things I love about it is that it can bring things in the background more into focus. The Halite isn’t only for videos, but it does have a gaming mode so it can even enhance your gaming experience. Read on to learn more…

A few months ago, we tested seven methods for applying thermal compound in order to determine which was the best. At the time, we concluded that a small dot in the center of the CPU is the best method to apply thermal compound. But this conclusion may be applied only for the hardware we used, and, since we ran our tests using a CPU cooler with a mirror-like base, we couldn't extrapolate that result for coolers with different characteristics, such as direct touch heatpipes coolers. In those coolers, there are gaps and irregularities on the base of the cooler which may need a different quantity or procedure to apply thermal compound. That's why we are testing again. This time we will try to answer the question, "What is the best way to apply thermal grease on direct-touch heatpipes CPU coolers?
