Over the last few years there have been many products that have come to market that have had the ability to grab our attention for one reason or another. In some instances this has been due to the new technologies and levels of performance that they bring or in other instances it may have been a radical design that changes the way in which we look at type of product. The product that we’re looking at today though has me buzzing in a completely different way and one which I doubt will happen again any time soon.
Today we take a look the newest flagship router from Netgear, the R6300. The R6300 is a dual-band wireless router based on 802.11ac Wi-Fi architecture which is the latest wireless protocol working in the 5 GHz band. Netgear has a great reputation for quality networking products so we are excited to see how Netgear integrates their new Broadcom engine with the latest and greatest Wi-Fi standard.
After working with the Buffalo AirStation WZR-600DHP dual-band router, the thing we can say with the most confidence is that we only scratched the surface of what the router – and more specifically, the DD-WRT firmware can do. At the 2008 CES, Thermaltake introduced a novel idea in the category of external storage, the hard drive dock. The BlacX dock supported either 2½" or 3½" SATA drives via a hot-swap, plug-in interface and featured USB 2.0 connectivity. It was an instant success. Although many other manufacturers would soon develop their own versions of the external drive dock, Thermaltake continued to refine their original design with subsequent models that added support for a 4-port USB hub, dual drives and finally eSATA. The item we have for review today represents the latest in the evolution of Thermaltake's drive dock, the BlacX 5G.
If the standard version of the Mac Mini did come with a Fusion Drive or SSD, the price tag would be easier to justify. It's too bad that it's not as easy to replace the hard disk as it is to add or replace the RAM. On the other hand, if you can afford it, the Mac mini is one of the best mini PCs currently on the market.
