With their latest router Linksys are looking to push the wireless-ac market forward while also reaching back into the past for some design ideas. Today we take a look at their WRT1900AC router and find out how those two aspects mix.

Over the last few years there have been many products that have come to market that have had the ability to grab our attention for one reason or another. In some instances this has been due to the new technologies and levels of performance that they bring or in other instances it may have been a radical design that changes the way in which we look at type of product. The product that we’re looking at today though has me buzzing in a completely different way and one which I doubt will happen again any time soon.

Routers are the life and soul of the media party in many modern households. They are also under an ever increasing demand to deliver high definition media content to multiple devices simultaneously. Whether this be for streaming TV, gaming online, downloading or uploading content – it all requires a fast connection to the router. The Linksys Smart Wi-FI EA6500 is a 5th generation router featuring incredible speeds of up to 1750 Mbps (between the 2.4GHZ and 5.0GHZ bands).

It's no secret that if you require the best possible internet access both in terms of performance and security then your best option is obviously to use a wired connection. Wireless connections are obviously the only choice when on the road so no one can really deny their usefulness but the current level of technology isn't close to providing the same data transfer speeds and security one can enjoy by using a wired one so until that changes we also prefer to follow that path. Because of that Powerline adapters have become quite popular amongst consumers who want to extend either their home or business network and although still not perfect since they rely much on the quality of the structures electrical grid they do offer a great alternative to using extra cables and WiFi. We've already reviewed quite a few such devices but today it's our very first encounter with one manufactured by Linksys the PLEK500 500Mbps Powerline Homeplug AV2 Kit (contains two PLE500 adapters).

When it comes to home networking there are a number of big names that come to mind and fortunately I have been able to put a number of products from these names to the test, however there has been one particular brand that I have been keen to get in touch with and establish a line of communications – namely Linksys. Believe it or not it is not always as simple as firing an email at someone and instantly getting products sent back in return as some may believe. After a few months of patiently waiting and after having a meeting with a few representatives from Linksys at this years CES in Las Vegas, I can finally say that I’m glad to have Linksys onboard and I look forward to having a good sniff through the stack of products that they have to offer.

Linksys has decided to replace its 802.11n products as fast as possible with 802.11ac models, the new WiFi standard that's supposed to be ratified by the end of this year. The router manufacturer recently came with three new products at the same time, the EA6300, EA6400 and the EA6700. That last one is set to replace the EA6500, and looks pretty impressive on paper.

The number of 802.11ac routers is steadily increasing. The latest one we got our hands on comes from Cisco, in the form of the Linksys EA6500. It's supposed to become the new router for the consumer market. Hardware.Info tested the EA6500 to find out whether the performance and features warrant those dreams.

At first glance the Cisco media hub appears to be just another NAS device like so many on the market, however as the name suggests this is aimed mainly at the media market with the focus on delivering music or video based files to other devices.
