SteelSeries took the original APEX, stripped it of most of the fancy stuff, and now deliver the APEX with just the essentials needed to dominate your game of choice.

During the past 3 years or so most gaming keyboards we've seen roll-out from the majority of the gaming peripheral manufacturers out there have been mechanical ones since they offer superior durability (build quality), much longer lifespan (key presses) and tactile feedback compared to regular membranes ones (or at least that's what the general opinion is). Of course one of the things i love about this industry is that there's always at least one manufacturer out there who likes to stand out from the others and do things quite differently and Mad Catz did exactly that with their S.T.R.I.K.E. line of gaming keyboards a while back since they went with a special membrane design instead. Well although i can't really say if that was the right choice or not (time will tell just how good these keyboards were) SteelSeries has also decided to launch two new membrane (rubber dome) based gaming keyboards the feature-rich APEX and the more "mainstream" APEX[RAW] and so today we will start with the APEX.
Peripherals
Based on rubber domes, the new SteelSeries Apex keyboard comes with a lot of interesting features like the ActiveZone Lighting system, extra directional arrows, raised macro keys, 4 separate layers, anti-ghosting for the most frequently used keys in games and more.

Peripherals
With stunning lighting effects and a fully featured design, how does the non-mechanical SteelSeries Apex step up against the competition?

There's a somewhat fierce fight taking place in the market nowadays between consumers who strongly support the typical membrane key technology used in the majority of keyboards and the ones who prefer the more durable mechanical keys used in a much lower degree. The only problem with this is that some manufacturers actually invest many resources to further improve membrane key technology and we've already seen such solutions one of which is the very good APEX Gaming Keyboard recently released by SteelSeries. The only downside however when you make a feature-rich gaming keyboard regardless of the type of keys used is its price tag and the APEX is really not the most affordable choice especially for a keyboard that uses membrane keys and thus is considered less "durable" by many people. Well SteelSeries has been around for a long time and they know first-hand that in order to cover most consumers they need to have variety and the cut-down version of the APEX named the APEX [RAW] Gaming Keyboard should tempt consumers on a tight budget a lot more than its brother.
Peripherals
SteelSeries removed all the bells and whistles from the regular Apex keyboard and released a [RAW] version of the peripheral without the spare USB ports, cloth-wrapped cable, and selective illumination by zone, among other things. However, it kept the basics: 17 macro keys (that can store 34 macros), the excellent configuration software, and the stylish angled design. Let's describe it first and then see how this "less sophisticated" Apex fared.
Peripherals
Recently SteelSeries announced the APEX range of keyboards and the RAW Edition landed on our desk recently. With numerous extra buttons, backlighting and low profile keys it looks to find a balance between functionality and cost which will appeal to gamers on a budget.
