Power Supply
Afternoon everybody. Hopefully you had a good Christmas etc. etc. If you have some money burning a hole in your pocket though, maybe you want a new power supply? Which one to choose though?

NZXT has traditionally been better known for their offerings in the low to middle end market where the bulk of consumers shop for their gear, and the HALE90 is maybe just a tad out of that price range. Not surprisingly then, NZXT has released a new HALE82 line of power supplies, in 650W, 750W and 850W ratings, that come in at a 20%-30% savings over their HALE90 counterparts. The HALE82 features a similar design, with semi-modular construction, single +12V rail and 80Plus Bronze certification.

Tell you what -- first review of the year, and we got something good in our hands. Late last year, there were some particularly unique power supplies released into the market; such as the Seasonic Platinum and Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid. Obviously, as you can tell by my hyperlink, the latter was already covered by yours truly back in November 2011. What is unique about these power supplies boils down to the fact that both PSU's internal cooling fan can be shut off completely under relatively light loads. As a quiet PC enthusiast, this is like a gift from God himself -- fusing together a compromise-free solution by combining both power and silence into one single package. Unfortunately, it seems Satan had a hand in the Silent Pro Hybrid, because there is one problem with it: The fan control system goes bazerk sometimes. That's too bad. So what we have here at APH Networks this morning is yet another product of similar ideas, but claims to have superior execution. Firstly, the Seasonic Platinum, as its name suggests, is 80 Plus Platinum certified. Secondly, the fan can remain off until 30% load is reached, which translates to 300W for our 1000W unit. Considering how most PCs don't suck down 300W even under moderate loads, this is a very impressive and crucial figure. Therefore, without further delay, is the Seasonic Platinum 1000W a power supply from Heaven, pure and unadulterated? Read on to find out!

As most would expect from an enthusiast grade power supply and from Seasonic, the X-1050 has a full complement of features. All protections are there including over temperature protection. The unit is rated for 100% continuous output at 50C and carries an 80Plus Gold rating. Months ago there were rumors that the X-1050 would be Platinum rated, but it looks like they weren't quite able to make it happen.
The Seasonic X-1050 is available at numerous places and can currently be had for $219.99 plus shipping at Newegg. That puts it squarely in the middle of the range for price when looking at 1000W units and with some more attractive features than the competition. Seasonic backs the unit with a five year warranty.

A couple of days ago, I sold my old dSLR body and lens locally through a popular online classified ads website. For the veterans among us, you will know this is usually a straightforward procedure -- someone contacts you, agree on the price beforehand, set a time and location to meet up, show them the product, and cash exchanges hand. But with anything that involves humans, there are always exceptions, and this is what I want to talk about this morning. The person I sold my camera to came with her mom in a late model, fully loaded Nissan Pathfinder SUV with a fancy vanity plate. After checking out the camera, her mom tried to pull a fast one on me, and said she only has $300 on her, and told me to just accept it. Well, as someone who is born in Hong Kong, the land of haggling masters, and a guy who has been in and out of car dealerships ever so often since I was nine years old, obviously it did not work. I have haggling, and thus, anti-haggling skills, in my blood. To make a long story short, she magically "found" the missing $20 in her purse, and we both went our ways. The way I see it, she probably thinks this was a smart thing to do. After all, she could have saved $20, right? Saving money is smart; this is more or less common sense to people of all ages. In the computer world, it is no different. But as most of us came to realize that not all power supplies are created equally, Thermaltake has a new line of PSUs called the SMART series to take on a very simple concept: Budget price, no frills, and eco-friendly performance. That's smart. But is it right? We cracked open a Thermaltake SMART 730W to see what's inside the brain.
