From time to time, we like to buy power supplies below USD 30 to see how they stack up against more expensive models from better-known companies. The TiVECO TVPS450, which is also sold in the US as ePower TVPS450, is a 450 W power supply that costs only USD 20, with the manufacturer promising that it can deliver its labeled wattage at 50º C and 80% minimum efficiency. The meaning of words change over time, and so does the value of things. For example, let's take a look at the word "apologize". According to Merriam-Webster, the definition we usually go by is "an admission of error or discourtesy accompanied by an expression of regret". However, if you lived a few hundred years ago, the same word probably meant "the defense especially of one's opinions, position, or actions" instead. Very few of our readers are going to be familiar with the Thortech name as it hasn't been around very long at all. A few may recognize the name as showing up while poking around a few of the online stores, but probably didn't give them much of a thought. What most of you will be surprised to know is that Thortech is a subsidiary of GeIL. GeIL announced in 2010 that it would start offering power supplies under the Thortech brand. Since then, the company has offered two lines of power supplies - the Thunderbolt series and Thunderbolt Plus series.
When OCZ bought PC Power & Cooling, the company said that PC Power & Cooling power supplies wouldn't have modular cabling systems. Well, scratch that. The latest release from the brand, the Silencer Mk III, features a modular cabling system and carries the 80 Plus Bronze certification, coming in 400 W, 500 W, and 600 W versions.
