Cougar's budget level power supply looks amazing and performs well for such a low cost unit. Let's dive in and take a close look at it now
Today I have Cougar's 550W PowerX power supply on the bench. The PowerX is a 550W power supply with a unique orange coloured chassis, 80PLUS Bronze certification, and a price tag that's well within reach of all potential buyers.
With some stand out styling and a low price point the PowerX 550w PSU looks to offer bronze level efficiency for those looking to build a gaming system, possibly with multiple low-mid range GPUs.
The Cougar PowerX 550W power supply obviously is a product designed to entice users into upgrading from a cheap unit of unknown (and, usually, extremely poor) quality to one of acceptable quality and performance standards. Considering that the MSRP of the power supply is just $69.99 and that the actual retail price usually is quite lower than the MSRP, the PowerX 550W might actually be a very good deal for casual users and gamers on a very tight budget. On the other hand however, the saying "you get what you pay for" fits perfectly in this case...
With many people already having purchased one of the latest GTX Titan graphics cards by NVIDIA (it was sold out after all) it really makes sense for us to focus on reviews about powerful and quite expensive 80Plus Platinum certified power supply units that can successfully feed that monster of a card with sufficient, clean and stable power (and we have). However since most people out there seem opt for either an GTX 660 or for one of the Radeon HD 7850 cards instead we also need to cater to their needs and so today we decided to bring you a review of one of the latest PSUs to hit the market, the reasonably priced 550W 80Plus Bronze Certified PowerX by Cougar.
Today we take a look at the Cougar PowerX 550W power supply. Never heard of Cougar? well they are a retail subset of parent company HEC. The PowerX 550W is a 80 Plus Bronze certified, compact, non modular design built into a brightly coloured chassis. We last looked at their CS 800W unit in January this year and while it didn’t earn a really high award from us, it was a capable all round unit.
Cougar is a brand that belongs to HEC/Compucase, originally targeted to the European market. Recently, they started expanding to the North American market as well. The RS series is comprised of models from 300 W to 650 W. Let's see how the 650 W model fared in our tests.

Nachdem Cougar mit der Power und Power CM Serie im Juni dieses Jahres seine ersten beiden Netzteilserien eingeführt hat, folgt nun eine weitere Serie. Die Cougar S Serie kommt in einem neuen Gehäuse und neuer Technik daher, besonders hervorzuheben ist hier die 80plus Silber Zertifizierung. Die neue Serie besteht derzeit aus zwei Modellen mit 700 und 550 Watt Leistung. Wir haben uns letzteres Modell angesehen und prüfen ob Cougar auch mit der neuen Serie überzeugen kann.
