Unless you are running multiple video cards and a beefy processor, you won't have any use for a monster 1KW+ PSU. Even relatively powerful hardware doesn't come close to using the kind of power that super high-end units provide. Today we will be taking a look at a "mainstream" power supply from FSP Group, the Aurum Gold 500. The Aurum is a 500 watt non-modular power supply that features 80+ Gold certification and dual 12v rails. The 500w model is one of four in the Aurum series; other models include a 400w variety and beefier 600w and 700w units.

A few weeks ago we reviewed the Silverstone Strider Gold 1200W power supply and we were very impressed with the results. If you can’t quite stretch to the £200+ asking price, then today’s review product might just hit the spot. The SilverStone Strider Plus 1000W power supply costs around £100 less, but maintains a modular design with 80 Plus Silver Certification. Is it worth your money?

Here at eTeknix, we take our PSU reviews very seriously! I have always considered the power supply to be the most important part of a PC, although it does not have a very glamorous job like a graphics card or CPU- it has an extremely important one. As you know, the power supply has to provide power to your components; however you may not know just how precise and accurate the power being supplied has to be. In short, if you start feeding components with poor quality power, the results will be either devastating or silent- as a bad power supply reduces the longevity of sensitive components. The results can also be dangerous to the user, which is something I hadn’t believed until a few days ago where I managed to give myself an electric shock by touching the chassis of a PC fitted with an ‘X-branded’ PSU, but that is a story for another time! We have also seen the explosive results of the infamous Hiper Type-R Power Supplies which were n otorious for going pop and taking many components with them.

Late last month we took a look at OCZ's current budget power supply, the ZS series 750w power supply. This unit featured a single 12v power rail, 80 Plus Bronze certification and a hardwired construction. The PSU performed just fine in our evaluation but one thing that many people (myself included) typically look for in a modern power supply is a modular design. Today we have an upgraded version of that power power supply that falls under OCZ's High Performance category, OCZ's ZT series modular power supply.
