The New Year is starting off well for the computer hardware industry. Intel is releasing the long-awaited Sandy Bridge platform and AMD is filling in more of the Phenom-II and Athlon-II series. The two AMD CPUs set for release in early January 2011 are the Phenom-II X4-840 and the Phenom-II X4-975BE. The Phenom-II X4-840 HDX840WFK42GM is the latest budget quad-core processor released by AMD. Set for release at an MSRP of only $102, the Phenom-II X4-840 could be a very affordable quad-core processor that brings a high level of performance to your computer without breaking the bank. At the end of 2008, AMD’s share price was just under $1.82. At the time we sat down to write this article, they were trading at $9.18. You don’t need a degree from the London School of Economics to see a 500% rise. There will have been lots of factors, but one is very hard to ignore – and that’s the shake-up in personnel at the very top of the organisation. As Corporate Vice President for World Wide Sales, John Byrne’s main responsibilities are channel sales and looking after small and medium sized businesses – as well as managing partner relationships with the major Taiwanese vendors. KitGuru caught up with Scotsman Byrne for an exclusive interview on how he sees AMD.

The other day when we saw the A-Series APU launch from AMD we had in depth look at the A8-3850 APU while also covering the new chipset associated with it. If you haven't already looked at it, I recommend you do head on over and check out our launch Llano coverage.

PCSTATS quickly compares Intel's HD 3000 IGP graphics core against six different integrated graphics solutions, including AMD's powerful new socket FM1 APU-based Radeon HD 6550D. 3DMark pretty much says it all; the Intel Z68 platform offers up a much needed boost to Intel IGP graphics. The HD 3000 IGP-CPU is still relatively weak compared to AMD's newest socket FM1 A8-3850 APU, but what's really surprising how far behind the Intel G45 platform falls!

Since we've already looked at the flagship AMD FX-8150 8-core processor and had disappointing results we thought we'd look at the entry level AMD FX processor, the FX-4100. The AMD FX-4100 is a quad-core processor is basically a FX-8150 with 4-cores disabled. The AMD FX-4100 even has the same 3.6 GHz base clock speed as the FX-8150! Read on to see how this $110 processor performs and if it is the processor to get!
