Conclusion

Lets take a closer look at the results in the games we tested. In this case we can see, that the performance improvement from the GTX 780 to the GTX 780 Ti varies between 6.9 (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim) and 19 percent (Dirt Showdown). On average the GTX 780 Ti is a good 14 percent quicker than the GTX 780.

One of the first things you will notice when digging for reasons why there is a 14 percent gap between these two cards is the fact, that the GTX 780 Ti features 25 percent more shader units than the GTX 780. Apart from that clock speeds on the GTX 780 Ti have been increased a little bit too. Nevertheless it is interesting to see that both these improvements don't make for a larger performance gap than 14 percent.
 
At this point we also want to have a quick look at power consumption. Running our test setup with the GTX 780 Ti made it consume six watt less than with the GTX 780. Under load we notice, that the test setup equipped with the GTX 780 Ti needed 31 watt more. In terms of load power consumption differences there are the more than 500 additional shader units combined with the slightly higher clock speeds, which account for the rather large jump. On the other hand, when looking at idle power consumption, the GTX 780 Ti needs less power. The secret to this lies in the revision of the GPU and the fact that NVIDIA improved power consumption on the B1 revision chip, which is used for the GTX 780 Ti, over the A1 GPU, used for the GTX 780.

Things are starting to get really interesting when we add the price to both sides of the euqation. Today you can buy a reference GTX 780 Ti for 549 Euro and a GTX 780 sets you back 387 Euro. This translates into a 42 percent price difference althought the GTX 780 Ti is just 14 percent quicker than the GTX 780. One could now say, that either the GTX 780 Ti is overpriced or the GTX 780 features a really competitive price tag. But actually the one thing that is for certain concerns NVIDIA's pricing scheme, where high-end cards set you back quite a few bucks extra and sometime you'll have quite a hard time justifying that difference.
