The ASUS Radeon R9 390 STRIX Gaming 8GB did well in our tests. It comes with a factory overclock of 50 MHz on the GPU as well a great cooler. Its fan profile has been set to deactivate the fans when the operating system is in idle, which makes the card noiseless under these circumstances. Under load this card is silent with the fans spinning only at 39%, while maintaining a maximum temperature target of 83°C. If you increase the fan speed manually you could lower the temperatures drastically. Nevertheless this wouldn't make sense, since what you want from a graphics card is to be as silent as possible while the GPU is not throttling. And this card is perfectly capable of doing exactly that. Performance wise this particular card is on the level we expected it to be. Since the R9 390 is basically a rebrand of the 290X with 4 GB of additional memory, it's able to score a few more frames especially running UHD. Most games, when they're being run at UHD, require more than 4GB of VRAM and that is actually where the 390 with 8GB scores. | - Performance - Cooling - Design - Noise level |

As we already mentioned, the card particularly benefits when being tested with games running ultra high resolutions. Having a closer look at UHD results, we see that this R9 390 with 8GB VRAM can pull away from the R9 290 by on average of 8.2 percent. This is thanks to the fact, that there is twice the memory than on the predecessor. Other than that the fact, that the GPU has been overclocked by 50 MHz, doesn't account for a big difference. Having a look at 1080p the 390 is only a tiny little be quicker than the 290X. At this point we're also checking on power consupmtion of this particular card. In idle we find the R9 390 STRIX Gaming 8GB from ASUS burn 68 Watts and under load the figures go up to 368 Watt. In comparison to that an R9 290 pulls 71 Watt from the plug when our system is in idle and 356 Watts under load, therfore this card is equally power hungry especially under full load. |

These days we find this card listed in Europe
for 355 Euro. At this price point the Radeon R9 390 STRIX Gaming 8GB is
an interesting card competing really heavily with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 at a lower price and higher performance. Should you be looking for a graphics card with 8GB of VRAM, a great cooler at a very reasonable price, then the ASUS Radeon R9 390 STRIX Gaming 8GB is definitely worth considering. |
