With the X99-WS/IPMI ASUS has a solid workstation motherboard in it's portfolio. To improve the airflow in server enclosures, the CPU socket and the DIMM slots have been rotated by 90°. Apart from that there is an IPMI 2.0 management engine, which allow for full remote control/maintenance of systems based on this board. When it comes to X99 standard features, this is a fully fledged high-end product, offering five PCI Express x16 slots as well as M.2, ten SATA ports and support for SATA Express. | -

Layout | + | - | |
The ASUS X99-WS/IPMI's layout has been very well thought. Once more practical are angled SATA connectors as well as the power- and reset-buttons. There is also a debug display which is very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. Apart from that the placement of the PCI-Express x16 slots is very well chosen. There is a total of five PCI Express slots, and between the second and the third PCI Express x16 slot there is a M.2 x4 slot. Apart from that we find one SATA Express connector on this board. | - Angled SATA connectors

Let's have a closer look at overall 3D performance. Calculating the average of all 3D benchmarks we ran, we see that this board comes in fourth in our comparison tables. Concerning the average of all 2D benchmarks we ran, this board leaves all other models behind. Overall this board does very well when it comes to performance in general. On another note we had a look at power consumption and it turns out that this board burns a bit more power than the average. Keeping in mind there is for example the additional IPMI management chip as well as other features this explains the increased demand for power. | -

Overclocking / BIOS | + | - | |
The BIOS of the X99-WS/IPMI is identical from what you get with other recent ASUS motherboards these days and the only difference is the backgound color. This means the basic structure has not been changed. Overall the structure is easy to understand and even if you're not an experienced user you will find the settings you'd like to change quickly. | - Clear arrangement - Sheer amount of options | ||
Recommendation | + | - | |
Checking Geizhals we found this board listed for 525 Euro, which makes it very expensive compared to other X99 motherboards. The workstation features like IPMI 2.0 as well as the completely reworked layout appear to be adding a lot to the final retail price. Nevertheless, this is an excellent product, which is perfectly suitable for any kind of highly stable and excellently performing workstation. |
