The X99-A from ASUS is an overall really good board, that comes with a rather affordable price tag. Compared to the predecessor the motherboard maker changed the color scheme from black/gold to black/white, which in our opinion is quite a bit better looking. We were also surprise to see that there are quite a few features such as beefed up audio, despite the attractive price. Nevertheless one can see that ASUS had to save a few bucks every here and there. You will notice that by checking the number of SATA ports or the fact, that there is not heapipe connecting the cooling elements. | -

Layout | + | - | |
The ASUS X99-A's Layout has been well thought. Once more practical are the angled SATA connectors as well as the power- and reset-buttons. There is also a debug display which is very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. A closer look at the full-size PCIe x16 slots reveals that slot number two and three are right next to one another. This means that the you can install up to three dual-slot graphics cards. We like the fact, that there is a SATA Express port as well as an additional M.2 x2 slot. These ports to attach different storage media greatly add to the flexibility of this board. | - Angled SATA connectors

Let's have closer look at overall 3D performance. Calculating the average of all 3D benchmarks we ran, we see that this board comes in seventh overall. Concerning the average of all 2D benchmarks we ran, this board again scores a seventh place out of ten models tested. On another note we had a look at power consumption and in this case we clearly see that we have a board here that has been equipped with quite a few additional chips. But nevertheless in case of load power consumption the result is very good. | - Power consumption load | - 3DMark Fire Strike

As you might have expected from ASUS you get an excellent BIOS which offers not only a boatload of tuning and tweaking options but is also very easy to use. Finding the right menus in a recent ASUS BIOS is not difficult at all, which is not only thanks to the graphical user interface but also comes from the well-thought structure. | - Clear arrangement | ||
