Samsung Magician and RAPID Mode

With the most recent version of Magician, Samsung is offering a lot to their customers. On the entry screen you get to see an overview. There are details on the health status as well as the amount of data, which has been written. You can also see how much data you've stored on this drive. Additionally there is a summary on system information as well as a link to the integrated performance benchmark.
Overall it is the most extensive software we've seen so far that is being shipped with an SSD. The latest version of Magician offers performance optimizations, the possibility to update the firmware, optimizations for the operating system, manual control on over provisioning as well as issuing the secure erase command. Last but not least there is quite an interesting point, which is called RAPID Mode, and that is what we're going to talk about in one of the next paragraphs.

Performance Benchmark - RAPID Mode Disabled

One of the goals Samsung has set itself was keeping the software as simple as possilbe. That is also what you see, when you look at the integrated performance benchmark. Basically it shows all relevant information.

RAPID Mode

With the RAPID Mode, Samsung has integrated DRAM caching into Magician. We have to say, that we had access to Magician 4.2 Beta, which is not yet available, but you can expect version 4.2 to be released soon. These days version 4.1 is the most recent and this one does not yet support RAPID Mode.
If you activate RAPID Mode, by the simple click of a button, 1 Gigabyte of your system memory is going to be reserved for caching purposes. After a reboot, the software will constantly analyze, which are the most read and written file, to keep them in the DRAM cache. As you can see from the screenshots below, performance ist going to be twice what you get from the drive running with RAPID Mode disabled.
