Finally after having posponed the embargo date hundred times it is gone for real and we are allowed to publish our review. With all of nVidia's launches it's been a while since we have last seen a new Radeon HD 7970 graphics card. The Radeon HD 7970 Matrix Platinum from ASUS come just right to mess up the green team. But not only, with this card ASUS should be able to provide you with a very powerful Radeon HD 7970. Thanks to the fact that this card has been equipped with ASUS' very well performing and yet silent DirectCU II Triple slot cooler along with a strong custom PCB and a huge factory overclocking you might be able to guess where the journey goes.

Technical data / specifications

With ASUS' flagship graphcis card, the Radeon HD 7970 Matrix Platinum, you get a factory overclocked monster with a custom PCB design as well as their formidable DirectCU II triple slot cooler. The manufacturer claims that this baby is about 15 % faster than the reference design, 20 % cooler and 3 times quieter. Thanks to the factory overclocking, binned GPU, custom cooler and reworked PCB design we can kind of believe that.

Looking at the specs, it says a base clock of 1'050 MHz with a boost clock of 1'100 MHz but our card was always running at full 1'100 MHz. For the record the stock designed Radeon HD 7970 runs at 925 MHz and the GHz Edition at 1'000 MHz with a boost of 1'050 MHz. This time factory overclocking has been made also regarding the GDDR5 memory with a clock speed of 1'650 MHz (6'600 MHz effective) against AMD's recommendation of 1'375 MHz (HD 7970) and 1'500 MHz (GHz Edition).

Now looking at the phycsical specifications of the Matrix Platinum version as said before ASUS reworked the PCB, binned the core and used their own GPU cooler. The Matrix Platinum gets a digital power design with no less than 20 super alloy phases while the reference HD 7970 has only an analogic power design with 6 standard phases. You also find a lot of ASUS technology that helps to improve overclocking, power efficiency, noise reduction (less EMI), lifespan and so on. The Matrix Platinum version is powered by the DirectCU II cooler in his Triple Slot version that features two 95mm fans with 9 blades each, three 7mm heatpipes and two 8mm heatpipes. I was too lazy to count the fins and calculate the dissipation surface/power but trust me, it's big.

Meant to be overclocked you will find a lot of cool ROG features. First of all this card has a ROG design aka black n' red as well as a backplate. Almost all components from the PCB except the chokes, four memory chips and caps are all covered by a metal shield. Then you get buttons that allow you to raise/lower the voltage of the GPU in real time, a button that will run the fan at 100 %, some activity LED and a safe mode button. Extreme overclockers will find pll, vmem, vcore headers to plug to their ASUS ROG motherboard as well as voltage reading points and points to short (LN2 Mode, ADJ MVDD, ADJ VDDC1 and R4E).

The is quite big, you will find only a manual, one power adapter, a DVI to HDMI adapter, a disc with drivers and softwares, a CrossFire cable and a ROG sticker. Gamers will find a the Diablo III mousepad very nice while overclockers will love the so called "VRM heatsink for liquid nitrogen overclocking".

Conclusion

The Matrix Platinum HD 7970 is one of the best Radeon HD 7970 out there, we didn't try it yet under liquid nitrogen but we believe it will easily compete with the Lightning from MSI. As for "normal" users thanks to the factory overclocking the Matrix Platinum gives you a nice boost in performance over the reference design. Furthermore the card features an ASUS made PCB design that comes with a lot of cool features like more phases, a digital power design and so on and so forth. What we also like is ASUS' DirectCU II cooler. It is a big cooler we that's true with it's triple slot size but it is very good. It was inaudible in both 2D mode and 3D loads, after two hours of FurMark I still haven't heard the fans of the card and the GPU temperature was as cool as 69°C.   - Noiseless in both 2D and 3D - PCB Design

Thanks to the high factory overclocking, the HD 7970 Matrix Platinum was on average 15 % faster than the reference HD 7970, which is enough to justify the high price of the card along with the bundle and the other features. Furthermore the power consumption is not bad too, only 34 more Watts under heavy load than the reference card. In idle it's not that good, with a custom design we expected a lower or close to reference design power consumption but it's not. The power consumption in idle was 12 Watts higher.   - Performance

In the end this HD 7970 Matrix Platinum graphics card from ASUS is faster, better, stronger than both reference HD 7970 and GHz Edition. So we recommend it to anyone who wants to invest money one of the best custom Radeon HD 7970 out there.   - Gaming
