AMD Llano A8-3870K Review

With their Llano APUs, AMD has some very interesting processors in their portfolio. The A8-3870K is the direct successor of the A8-3850. The "K" at the end of the name indicates that this processor comes with an open multiplyer. This means that this part should be lots of fun for overclocking.




How AMDs recent 3870K CPU performs in our benchmarking parcours, that's what we're going to show you on the following pages. Furhtermore we'll also take a closer look at the specifications and features of this CPU.

The Llano APU


Llano is AMDs answer to Intels Sandy Bridge processors. Of course Llano doesn't compete with the high end Sandy Bridge parts. There Intel would tear AMD aparat, performancewise. No, AMD wants to offer a very well priced product that comes with a balanced mix of processing power and graphics performance. Therefore AMDs biggest advantage is Llanos HD 6550D graphics unit, which is substantially faster than Intels HD 2000/3000 integrated circuitry.



Llanos processor cores are the further development of AMDs Phenom II and Athlon II. Overall AMD has been able to improve IPC (Instructions per Cycle) by more than six percent. Therfore the overworked architecture is capable of executing tasks in a more efficient way. Furthermore AMD also increased L2-Cache size, which is now 1 Megabyte. Regarding L1-Cache, there are 128 Kilobyte and for data and instructions you find 64 Kilobyte of cache in both cases.

3DMark 06

3DMark 06 is getting older these days. Therefore if you are using really powerful graphic cards you will hit CPU limitation which means that the graphic card isn't the bottleneck in the system. This is also the reason why in recent high-end desktop systems 3DMark 06 scales nicely with the CPU and the graphic card has much less influence on the scores.

3DMark Vantage

3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze nearly everything out of a recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long: DirectX10, FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping, GPU-physics simulation and different shader effects are being used to even make recent high-end systems struggle.

Cinebench

The test procedure consists of two main components: The first test sequence is dedicated to the computer's main processor. A 3D scene file is used to render a photoreaslistic image. The scene makes use of various CPU-intensive features such as reflection, ambient occlusion, area lights and procedural shaders. During the first run the benchmark only uses one CPU (or CPU core) to ascertain a reference value. On computers that have multiple CPUs or CPU cores and on those that simulate multiple CPUs (via HyperThreading or similar technolgies), Cinebench will run a second test using all available CPU power.

Crysis DirectX10

Crysis is still one of the games which has very high system requirements. Therefore developer Crytek implemented Direct3D-10-API, High-Dynamic-Range-Rendering, Parallax Occlusion Mapping, Soft Shadows, Motion Blur, Depth of Field as well as Soft Particles. We test Crysis by using DirectX10 to show CPU-sacaling especially which low resolutions. If we look at the high resolutions we are able to spot that the CPUs influence compared to the graphic card becomes much less important.

Resident Evil 5 DirectX10

Resident Evil uses nearly every modern rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11 ready. Street Fighter4

Street Fighter 4 comes with an extra benchmark version which makes testing you system childrens play. At low resolutions the system requirements are pretty low and we can see CPU-scaling in the results. At high resolution the graphic card becomes more important and the CPUs clock speed has less influence on the fps.

Power consumption

Hereby we take the power consumption under load as well as idle. To generate a load situation we use SiSoft Sandra's Burn-In Module and measure the whole systems power consumption. The values we take when the System just booted into Windows and the load drops.

Because the A8-3870K is a CPU with open multiplyer we've also overclocked it. We didn't bother doing this with the standard aircooler installed. Instead we chose to hunt down some records using liquid nitrogen to cool this little thing to -196°C.

Generally is was very easy to overclock this CPU. You just have to give it more volt, adjust the multiplyer and in the fiddle with the bus clock. That's it. We have been able to run the CPU with 6'067 MHz, which, at this point in time, is a brand new world record for AMD Llano CPUs.

Conclusion

With the A8-3870K, AMD has a really versatile allrounder in its portfolio. We very much liked that this CPU was very easy to overclock. Setting the multiplyer higher as well as give the CPU a bit more volt is already enough to have some overclocking fun. Furhtermore there is the very attractive price of just CHF 149.- (est. EUR 124.-). For this kind of money you do not only get a CPU, you also get an integrated HD 6550D graphics chip, that offers sufficient performance to do casual gaming a lower resolutions.

From the processor itself you shouldn't expect miracles. In benchmarks that need a lot of processing power the A8-3870K lacks behind. Never the less there is plenty of performance for an office PC. If you keep in mind that this is not only a CPU and you also get quite a strong integrated graphics processor in the package, which is way more powerful than Intels HD 2000/3000 solution, then you'll quickly realize that this is a product with a very good price/performance ratio.

Next to office PCs you could also build HTPCs with this CPU on which you could watch movies as well as play some games from time to time. Furthermore, if you do some calculations you find that CPU, motherboard and memory will set you back just about CHF 250.- (est EUR 208.-), which is highly competitive.
