Visit   Z-Drive R4 PCIe SSDs and VXL Software Provide Enterprise, Host-Based Flash Performance and Complete Virtualization Capabilities
Last Update 2012/7/4 16:49
Category  Manufacturer arrow OCZ arrow Press Releases
banner Description
OCZ Technology Group, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCZ), a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) for computing devices and systems, today announced that its PCI Express (PCIe) SSD platform, featuring all Z-Drive R4 PCIe SSD models and VXL software, accelerates virtualization of Microsoft’s cloud-ready SQL Server 2012 database. Providing enterprise, host-based flash performance and support for all virtualization capabilities, this combination of OCZ SSD hardware, with acceleration and virtualization software, is an optimal and cost-effective solution for the data access requirements of SQL Server 2012.

The combination of Z-Drive R4 PCIe SSDs and VXL software enables the full potential of SQL Server 2012 in virtualized data centers through the following key capabilities:

  • Delivers live, on-demand business data exploration and analysis by combining SQL Server 2012 xVelocity column store indexes with OCZ host-based flash virtualization and caching.
  • Enables auto-detection, hot-zone caching that automatically identifies frequently accessed data pages within SQL Server 2012 to deliver on-host flash caching capabilities.
  • Divides database file groups between virtualized all-flash drives, storage area network (SAN) drives, and flash-cached drives to deliver optimal performance and a reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO).
  • Places performance critical files (such as SQL Server 2012 tempDBs) on host-based flash while retaining network accessibility.
  • Drives dynamic SQL Server 2012 VM migration from one server to another through VMware vMotion support, end-to-end mirroring, high availability (HA) and fault tolerance to server and flash failures.

  • VXL software enable Z-Drive R4 PCIe cards to be virtualized as a highly available network resource through its ‘SAN-less Data Center’ mode so that the flash can be exposed to any VM in the virtualized cluster without negating any of the virtualization capabilities of the hypervisor layer. This flash-only level performance sets the precedence for an all-silicon SAN-less data center that delivers all the benefits of virtualization without the need for costly backend HDD SANs.

    "Our PCIe Z-Drives and VXL software distribute the flash between VMs based on need, making sure that no VM inefficiently occupies flash when it can be better used elsewhere in the SQL Server 2012 environment and that the flash cache itself is optimally used regardless of how many VMs are running concurrently," said Ryan Petersen, CEO of OCZ Technology. "Even though the flash cache resource is located in one server, it can be shared across multiple servers making VXL the only fast cache and virtualization software that can deliver this unique capability, especially when VMs do not typically reach peak workload requirements concurrently."

    OCZ’s successful fourth generation Z-Drive R4 PCIe card provides a compact, power-efficient solid-state solution that fits directly into a server’s PCI Express slot to increase server application performance while delivering fast and reliable access to data without burdening host CPU and memory resources. When combined with OCZ’s VXL software, any OCZ PCIe-based Z-Drive R4 model (including the Z-Drive R4 CloudServ™) enables the delivery of a complete virtual performance system for enterprise customers looking to efficiently distribute flash resources across VMs as a means to maximize performance of key applications. With the Z-Drive R4 PCIe cards deployed at the host layer of virtual servers, data access is not a limiting factor since VXL software can run up to 10 times the number of VMs and can keep up with the random IO requirements of all the VMs in the system.

    For more information on how the combined OCZ hardware/software virtualization solution is optimized for MS SQL Server 2012 applications, dramatically increasing MS SQL Server transactional IOPS performance and query completion times, while reducing database read latencies, please access the following white paper, "Accelerating MS SQL 2012 with OCZ Flash Virtualization"

    Last Update 2012/7/4 16:45
    Category  Manufacturer arrow OCZ arrow Press Releases
    banner Description
    OCZ Technology Group, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCZ), a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) for computing devices and systems, today announced that Dynamite Data, a global leader of online retail channel intelligence, has selected OCZ’s Deneva 2 SATA III SSDs as part of its updated storage infrastructure. With the addition of Deneva 2 SSDs to its web-based comparative shopping service, Dynamite Data can now cache ‘hot’ data on SSD flash residing in a host server providing clients with unmatched critical, competitive and real-time insights on retail big data, with over 30 million extractions every day from merchants worldwide.

    The excessive downloading of product comparisons and pricing scenarios by subscribers, in conjunction with loading database indexes at 30 to 50 million web pages per day, combined with general network I/O activity, caused considerable disk strain in Dynamite Data’s initial enterprise storage environment. Using conventional hard disk drives (HDDs) penalized system performance and caused disk I/O bottlenecks and latency delays. In addition, the MySQL comparative product databases did not adequately scale when stored in conventional HDDs and required additional drives to satisfy server workload demands, RAID redundancy (in the event of hard drive failures) and more power, cooling and maintenance costs, all of which drove up total cost of ownership (TCO).

    As part of its recent IT refresh, Dynamite Data researched competitive enterprise SSDs for inclusion and selected Deneva 2 SSDs from OCZ. With the industry’s fastest transactional performance for SATA III-based drives, Deneva 2 SSDs deliver up to 80,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) performance (random 4K writes), a maximum bandwidth of 550 MB/s, and support up to 480GB capacities. Supporting best-in-class enterprise endurance and reliability, Deneva 2 SSDs include power loss data protection, minimal write amplification, intelligent block management and wear-leveling, security encryption, and advanced error correction code (ECC) algorithms and techniques.

    Dynamite Data conducted a battery of tests on the Deneva 2 SSDs to gauge improvements in database performance and data access. The tests included generating excessive product comparisons and pricing downloads, loading millions of unstructured web buy pages into structured MySQL indexes, all while concurrently running general network I/O activity. In comparison to its original HDD storage configuration, the Deneva 2 SSDs delivered the following performance improvements:

  • 430 percent improvement in read performance;
  • 400 percent improvement in write performance;
  • 420 percent improvement in total read/write performance; and
  • 430 percent improvement in the average number of MySQL queries handled per second.

  • “By configuring system level applications and database indexes on Deneva 2 SSDs, we eliminated the disk I/O bottlenecks our subscribers experienced in favor of solid-state flash storage that delivers significant and noticeable improvements in system application performance and access to comparative product information,” said Kristopher Kubicki, Chief Architect for Dynamite Data. “With this improved performance, scalability and endurance, the Deneva 2 SSDs will enable us to data warehouse even more web-based retail channel products while providing our subscribers with heightened experiences.”

    “We are very pleased that Dynamite Data implemented our Deneva 2 SSDs into their refreshed enterprise enabling significantly faster access to database indexes and comparative product information,” said Alex Mei, CMO for OCZ Technology. “With three billion buy pages available globally, Dynamite Data’s objective to data warehouse all e-commerce products for its retail channel is now a reality with our SATA III-based SSDs added to the infrastructure.”

    For more information on how Dynamite Data addressed the storage challenges it faced by upgrading its infrastructure to new and improved capabilities that deliver flash data caching into comparative shopping platforms, please access the following Dynamite Data case study link.
