Review: MSI Radeon HD 7970 Lightning
Category : AMD
Published by Christian Ney on 18.10.12
The graphics card provided to us by MSI belongs to their Lightning series and it is no less than the legendary R7970L. The one that broke and is still breaking all 3D World Records. But here we are going to see what this card is worth under non extreme conditions. If you are familiar with the Lightning series then you already know what to expect about this one. The card comes with an heavily customized PCB and power design, the Twin Frozr IV cooler and a nice factory overclocking.

On the following pages we will show you the strenghts and weaknesses of the MSI Radeon HD 7970 Lightning.
(As several other media used the card before us the graphics card/box and bundle weren't in mint conditions at all. Therefore we didn't take pictures of the actual sample but used the ones available on media.msi.com. The bundle picture comes from Tom's Hardware.co.uk)

Technical data / specifications

With the Lightning series from MSI you always get a kickass graphics card that comes with the Twin Frozr cooler, a custom PCB with a beefed up power design and a high factory overclocking. The manufacturer claims that this baby is 14°C cooler and 6.3 dB quieter than the reference Design from AMD cooling wise. As for the power design, well... it is not comparable with the reference design one.

Looking at the specs, we have a graphics core clocked at 1'070 MHz. For the record the stock designed Radeon HD 7970 runs at 925 MHz and the GHz Edition at 1'000 MHz with a boost of 1'050 MHz. MSI also overclocked the GDDR5 memory, but this one is shy. Only 25 MHz over the reference card while the memory chips used (Hynix H5GQ2H24MFR-R0C) are specified to run 100 MHz higher (1'500 MHz). So if you do the maths this gives you 1'400 MHz memory clock for the Lightning and 1'375 MHz for the reference design card.

Now looking at the physical specifications of the 7970 Lightning version as said before MSI reworked the PCB, beefed up the power design and used their own cooling system. Therefore the 7970 Lightning gets a digital power design with no less than 14+2+1 phases while the reference HD 7970 has only an analogic power design with 5+1+1 phases.
Power Design Features of the 7970 Lightning:
- GPU Reactor
- CopperMOS
- Hi-c CAPs
- Golden SSC
- Dark Solid CAP

The 7970 Lightning is powered by the Twin Frozr IV dual slot cooler that features two 100mm fans with 11 blades each and five 8mm nickel-plated copper heatpipes. I was too lazy to count the aluminium fins and calculate the dissipation surface/power but trust me, it's big. The base of the cooler is made of Nickel-plated copper too.

As MSI's flagship Radeon HD 7970 it's meant to be heavily overclocked. And MSI did everything to make this possible. Apart from the power design we described above you get a switch on the card that allows you to select between two BIOS. The first one is the "safe" one that follows AMD's specs (frequencies and protections). The second BIOS when selected clocks the card to 1'070 MHz (Core) and 1'400 MHz (Memory), unlocks all protections (Disable OCP (Over Current Protection) and APS (Active Phase Switching)) and higher the clocks (2'500 vs 1'125 MHz) and powertune (460 vs 260 A) ranges. This graphics card also features Triple Overvoltage. Aka via MSI's overclocking software AfterBurner you can change the GPU/Memory and VDDCI voltages without the need of hardmods. Those voltages can also be monitored via the same software or using a Digital MultiMeter plugged to the voltage reading points located at the top of the PCB.

Fan Speed

Noise Level

For the noise level results, we measured the noise level using a decibel meter (Voltcraft SL-200) located at 1 meter away from the graphics card.

VRM Temps

We used HWInfo for the VRM temperature monitoring of the reference design cards (AMD Stock, XFX Double Dissipation and the Accelero Hybrid). For the MSI HD 7970 Lightning we used AfterBurner and for the ASUS 7970 DirectCU II Top and Matrix Platinum we used GPUTweak.
idle temperature is the highest temperature measured after 15mins idle time right after boot.
The load temperature is the highest temperature measured after 1 hour of BattleField 3 gameplay.
Fan speed: Auto
Room Temperature: 25°C

Idle Temperature

Idle, temperature is taken after 15 minutes @ 30 %, 50 % and 100 % fan speed.
Room Temperature: 25°C

Temperature under Furmark

For FurMark, temperature is taken after 15 minutes of GPU Burn test @ 30 %, 50 % and 100 % fan speed.
We stopped the test when the GPU temperature hit 85°C.

Conclusion

General   + -
MSI's Radeon HD 7970 Lightning is an engineering masterpiece as Lightning cards have always been. For normal users out of the box the card will offer 8 % more performance over the stock clocked HD 7970. For extreme overclockers the real potential of this card is revealed under cold. I mean this card is the one used to break almost all 3D World Records. Thanks to his overworked PCB and power design as well as being hardmod free with the special unlocked BIOS.
Unfotunately this card is not gold for normal users because the cooler is quite loud under load when playing demanding games. To fix this issue you can change the thermal grease to a better one like the Gelid GC-Extreme and fix the fan speed at 30 % in which case the card become almost noiseless and will still cool itself down. Keep an eye on temperatures using AfterBurner to be sure though. If the GPU is heating too much then you can raise the fans speed up to 40-45 %.
  - Noiseless in 2D - PCB Design
- Factory Overclocking - Bundle
- Good cooling system - Dual BIOS
- Triple Overvoltage
- Noise level under load - 80 € more expensive than the cheapest HD 7970 - No Dual-link DVI

Performance   + -
Thanks to the factory overclocking, the HD 7970 Lightning was on average 8 % faster than the reference HD 7970, which is enough to justify the high price of the card along with the bundle and the other features. Furthermore the power consumption is not bad too, only 16 more Watts under heavy load than the reference card. In idle the power consumption can be considered as not good. Because of the overworked design as well as the use of only one phase in idle we thought that the card was going to draw less power than the reference design. We were wrong as it was actually drawing 5 more Watts.   - Performance
- 8 % faster than the reference HD 7970
- idle power consumption

Recommendation   + -
In the end that's one hell of an engineering masterpiece, this card really belongs to the Lightning series. But unfortunately it is not perfect, we found the noise level of the fans under games too loud. Therefore our recommandation goes to noise resistent headphone-gamers as well as extreme overclockers. It is really a nice card to play with under cold, you almost have nothing to do but cool it down.   - Gaming

Overclocking
- Extreme Overclocking

We give the MSI Radeon HD 7970 Lightning very good 4 out of five stars.
