In this review we will be looking at the Thermaltake FrioOCK which happens to be the high powered upgrade to the popular Frio that we reviewed last year. The Frio ended up as a contest prize and we have been looking for a suitable replacement ever since.
In this review Frostytech will be testing a promising looking heatsink from Thermaltake called the FrioOCK. However you pronounce the name, the Thermaltake FrioOCK is a 162mm tall variation on the familiar tower heatsink with a lot of potential. The cooler weighs over a kilogram (1093grams) and comes with two 130mm fans arranged in a push-pull configuration that scale from 2100-to-1200RPM.
Earlier this year Thermaltake launched an air-cooled CPU cooler called the Frio. This cooler has a maximum cooling capacity of up to 220W and is marketed toward overclocking enthusiasts. The Lich King was the master and lord of the Scourge, and he ruled over them telepathically from the Frozen Throne on top of Icecrown. Well, I guess until I killed him about a year ago, but that is beside the point. The Thermaltake Frio OCK, a strange name for a product, literally means Cold Over-clocker King (sic). So what does an undead lord have to do with CPU cooling? Absolutely nothing; however, I couldn't help but notice the similarities between the two of them. Anyone who has played Warcraft 3 or World of Warcraft would certainly know what gave me the idea of putting them together. The real question is whether or not the Lich King can keep my Core i7-2600K pleasantly chilled? With Thermaltake boasting a title of king, it leaves for some very high expectations. As I'm sure many of the readers know, practical overclocking is not just about speed. It is a balance between performance, heat dissipation, stability, and to some extent, sound. This means for an air cooler to be considered king, it would need to do exceptionally well in at least three of categories listed. Obviously, the Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler, reviewed by my colleague Jonathan back in January 2010, comes to mind as the challenger to the Thermaltake Frio OCK. As it turns out, in Jonathan's other review, the "regular" Frio was only a few degrees warmer than the NH-D14. I'm curious to see if the "OCK version" can prove to the NH-D14 who is really the master of the undead when it comes to cooling, so read on to find out!
Anyone who has gone looking for a CPU cooler knows there are a ton of choices on the market. In most instances, you the buyer, have some prerequisites to the purchase of any cooler. Things like noise level, appearance, and fit are top of the list in most instances. On the flip side of things, there are a bunch of guys who don't really care what it looks like, or if it will fit in a case, as likely they are using some sort of test bench. What matters most to these users is performance and if they can set new records with the use of a newly released air cooler.
Thermaltake has been in the business of producing CPU heatsinks and their related accessories for quite a while now. As we've seen in past reviews, Thermaltake's engineers generally know what they're doing. Today we'll be taking a look at their Frio OCK CPU cooler, a souped-up version of the Frio cooler already reviewed here.
We first saw this cooler on display at CES 2011 in the suit that Thermaltake was set up in. The Frio OCK is the refreshed version of Thermaltake's top Frio cooler. With OCK standing for “Over Clocker King,” it wasn’t hard to determine the target market here. We are actually a little surprised to see it released as our rep said it might not make it to market due to a cost prohibitive construction.
