Thermaltake tries its hand at notebook cooling and external speakers. The Massive SP is now our second entry in this market. Let's take a look.

A promising looking tower heatsink, the Glacialtech Alaska CPU cooler sets itself apart with the use of perforated aluminum cooling fins, a pseudo-honeycomb cross sectional fin geometry and six 6mm diameter copper heatpipes tightly packed behind an integral nickel-plated copper heatspreader. The dozens of 2mm diameter perforations dot each of the 40 or so aluminum fins on the Alaska heatsink and function as a pathway for air pressure to equalize between the different cooling fins. Glacialtech call this the "breathing effect".

Fan controllers are still considered a niche product, although a broader range of the enthusiast audience are adopting them to help reduce system noise. They allow the end user to control the speed of a number of fans in a computer chassis, without having to use any software. This can be very practical if you have a handful of noisy, high airflow fans and don’t want to replace them all.

The Zaward Gyre (ZCJ010) is a box of a heatsink. There is of course adequate clearance around the CPU socket for memory and VRM heatsinks and such, but at first glance it's not exactly clear how the Gyre works. A 120mm fan rests on top of the heatsink, but all four sides of the 110mm tall cube are wrapped in smokey grey plastic. Making the heatsink even more perplexing, the 120mm fan blows perpendicular to the direction of the aluminum fins.

At it's core, Glacialtech have equipped the 136mm tall UFO V51 Silent heatsink with two 1600RPM fans surrounding a large aluminum fin array, and framed in by a plastic casing that acts like a shroud to duct air through it. The heatsink weighs 780grams and is compatible with both Intel socket 775, 1366 and the entire family of AMD socket 939/AM3 processors.

Heatsinks are a normal part of any modern computer and are designed to keep your components cool enough to run. Given these devices are utilitarian in nature there is rarely consider what they should look like. Some are massive towers of heatpipe and radiator while others might be a simple chunk of metal with fins extruded from the surface. The key point to take away from this is that heatsinks rarely look, good.

In all other regards Coolermaster's Hyper TX3 heatsink is a compact mid-level heatsink suitable for use on AMD socket 745/939/940/AM2/AM3 processors and Intel socket 775/1156 chips (not LGA1366 however). The Hyper TX3 heatsink weighs in at 470 grams, stands less than 140mm tall, and comes equipped with a low noise 92mm 800-2800RPM PWM fan that drives 17-54CFM according the manufacturer. The heatsink is built around three skinny 6mm diameter copper heatpipes that connect a small aluminum base to the 92x92mm tower of aluminum cooling fins.
