Noctua strikes again and delivers the newest concept in their cooling line-up. With all the CPU coolers I have received over the years I gained a lot of respect for the Noctua name and simply, I love the "professional" or "heavy-duty" feel of the Noctua coolers. Even the smaller 90mm fan driven coolers have the feel of a superior cooler before you even strap it on to see (and not hear) the results they produce.
I was not sent a sample of the original inception, which by Google's dating system on the reviews, it looks like the Freezer 13 came out at the end of last year. This version of the cooler is a bit different in both the shape of the fin body, and the design that gets stamped into each fin of the Freezer 13 versus the newer PRO release. The original design called for four 6mm diameter heat pipes that got surrounded by forty-five aluminum fins, and the lower set of 10 fins were smaller than the rest. On top of that, the Freezer 13 was only shipped with a 92mm fan to do all the work. All things considered, a 200W rating on that cooler is impressive to say the least.
Today for review I've got the massive Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler. I'm testing it on my Intel Corei5 750 CPU both at stock speeds and with an overclock. I don't have many other Socket1156 coolers on hand so I've put it up against two other Noctua coolers and one from Cooler Master for comparison.
Noctua is a brand name that is very often associated with three things: silence, quality and performance. Yet there is a lot more to Noctua than the NH-D14: that world renowned dual tower heatsink that is the yardstick by which air CPU cooler performance is measured.
In recognition of the growing Home Theatre Personal Computer (HTPC) and Small Form Factor Personal Computer (SFF PC) markets, Noctua has introduced three CPU coolers in recent times which are of note. The newest additions are the NH-L9i and NH-L9a and a slightly older addition is the NH-L12. We will have a review of the NH-L9i coming very soon but in today's review we have with us the NH-L12.
Today I will be reviewing the Gelid GX-7. Gelid are another name on a list of companies who seemily have come out of no-where, but quickly raised to the top. Gelid have been around for nearly 4 years, and unlike many new companies in this industry, haven’t attempted to enter too many markets at once, rather focusing purely on HSF’s for CPU’s & GPU’s, Fans and Thermal Interface Material (TIM).
CPU Cooling has advanced somewhat in recent years with many different techniques being tried and tested. A relatively new company, Reeven, currently offer two direct heat-pipe CPU Coolers. Today, we’ve been luckily enough to acquire one such cooler, the RCCT-0901S. Let’s see if it performs to the same specification of more well-known CPU Coolers.
