The Samsung 256GB 840 pro SSD is one of the newest storage devices in the Samsung lineup. With this revision Samsung has included their triple-core MDX controller into the 840 line. The three cores allow the 840 and 840 pro drives to execute multiple instructions at a time improving performance under heavy use. Using a SATA 3.0 6GB/sec interface the Samsung 840 Pro is rated for 540MB/sec sequential read, 450MB/sec sequential write speeds, 100,000 IOPS in random read, and 90,000 IOPS in random write speed. All while using a minimal amount of power at an average of only .068 watts during active use and .042 watts in idle power. Samsung also includes their Samsung Smart Data Migration Software in the package to assist in the transition and Samsung Magician 4.x to assist with monitoring and maintaining the health of the drive, along with a 5 year warranty.
Being known for sending products back with a note explaining why a product is junk, I will never recommend it to anyone. But obviously something has changed in my line of thinking or else you wouldn’t even be reading this review to begin with. To start things off, Corsair’s new F40 is not a reduced channel POS that should have never seen the light of day. This is a real SSD with all of the channels sending and receiving data just like the big boys that I normally cover. That means that most of the performance is there...not all of the performance since smaller flash is a bit slower, but enough is retained to make the F40 worthy of your time.

OCZ's latest series of performance SSDs, the Vertex 2 and Agility 2, both make use of the SandForce 1200 controller, and have proven themselves to be very fast performers in our reviews. Despite more and more mainstream users adopting SSDs for their desktop systems, the majority of drives continue to be manufactured in the 2.5" notebook format. When it comes to flash memory drives, space is less of an issue and the 2.5" size is more versatile. As OCZ points out however, a 3.5" drive has a lower cost per gigabyte and is more easily integrated into desktop and server applications without the need for adapters. They now offer both their Vertex 2 and Agility 2 drives in a 3.5" format, and it is the former that we will be reviewing today.
