We are still a few days away from CES 2012, but the eleventh annual Storage Visions Conference is well underway. We were able to take a look at some unreleased products from Intel, Crucial, OCZ and ioSafe that are worth a look if you are interested in storage. The next generation of SSDs promise more performance with additional focus on reliability. Read on to see what the highlights of the show were for us.

A few weeks ago we posted a review on the SanDisk Extreme II 240GB capacity SSD and it turned out to be one of the stronger contenders we have seen to date, and most definitely the strongest using a Marvell controller. We wanted to today follow that up with an analysis of that same drive, this time in the 480GB capacity, as a form of confirmation that this SSD has what it takes to stand up there with the best.

I find OCZ's current situation similar to the early 1990's 49ers. OCZ had a very good run with SandForce, winning best consumer SSD awards with both the Vertex 2 and a year later with Vertex 3. Just like Joe, the SandForce SF-2000 series is starting to look a little older and the young competition from other makers is starting to catch up. SandForce might offer the fastest controller to date, but that might not be the case starting next season.

Once again, we are quite pleased with the overall performance of a Seagate GoFlex product. Seagate is clearly hoping the GoFlex for Mac will fill one of the only real voids left in the GoFlex lineup, and at the same time provide a product targeted directly at Mac users. While their other products do work with OS X out of the box, the others are not optimized for the Mac platform.

Chris takes a close look at Thermaltake's MAX-1562 6-in-1 2.5-inch drive enclosure that includes both SATA and SAS support for 2.5" HDDs and SSDs.

The Mushkin Callisto SSDs offer read speeds of up to 285MB/s and write speeds of up to an impressive 275MB/s thanks to the use of the Sandforce SF-1200 controller and Intel MLC NAND Flash. This makes the Callisto SSD one of the fastest on the market and we take a look at the 60GB Callisto series SSD with part number MKNSSDCL60GB. Read on to see how it does compared to ten other hard drives and solid-state drives!

It was just over a year ago that we analyzed the Runcore ProV 3Gbps 240GB SSD as one of the top SSDs available, then surpassing some RAID configuration performance results. As amazing as that review was, it now stands to be a great example of how far SSD technology has progressed this past year. This report looks at Runcore’s ProV Max SSD which contains the SATA 3 SF-2281 processor, as did our report of the Runcore T50 120GB mSATA SSD that we reviewed a few months prior.
