Over the last couple months we took on the mission of finding the perfect HDD desktop docking station. The first two products we looked at were low cost units that were only limited by the amount of bandwidth our motherboard was able to provide. After that we moved on to the Thermaltake BlacX 5G, another USB 3.0 docking station that included some great accessories, an extra long cable that made moving our test system from under the desk less painful and was also able to deliver amazing performance. Now that we've seen the best USB 3.0 has to offer, a new docking station has taken over our test bench. The Thermaltake BlacX Duet forgoes USB 3.0 entirely and sticks to a tried and true eSATA / USB 2.0 combination, but that's not what the duo in Duet is about.

SanDisk released firmware R211 and customers celebrated. The 480GB Extreme uses the same philosophy that made the 240GB model so popular. You get a very good SSD with real premium flash at an unbeatable price.

We've tested SuperSSpeed's S301 SLC before, but a lot has changed since we said it was the fastest SSD in the world. The competition has caught up a bit, and SuperSSpeed now stocks the drive in the US, and we get a newer TRIM fixing firmware.

The Mach Xtreme MX-GX USB 3.0 Flash Drives offer incredible read speeds and come in 4 different flavours: 8GB, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB; they are also priced competitively, the 16GB model being found at CaseKing.de for about 29.90 Euros.

On the capacity front we have already reviewed solid state drives with 512GB of capacity, quite a bit more than the first 300GB VelociRaptor, but of course the cost was more than what six 300GB VelociRaptors would be. It was still a contributing reason why Western Digital should take a good look at the series and either kill it or update it with a new product line as quickly as possible.

With the growing popularity of home and small office NAS devices, demand has been growing for a new kind of drive: one that can stand being run all day, every day, but won't break the bank with excessive power draw. Western Digital has developed a new line to fill that role, and today we'll be taking a look at their latest and greatest, the Red 4TB.

Seagate has recently re-branded their consumer storage products, formerly named Barracuda, in time for the launch of their 15th-generation. The 4TB Seagate Desktop HDD (OEM model ST4000DM000, retail kit STBD4000400) features a SATA 6Gb/s interface with Native Command Queueing (NCQ). Eight data heads read and write to four 1GB disc platters which enable 625Gb/in2 areal density. Cached by 64MB DRAM, this 5900 RPM hard disk drive is specified to move files at 180 MB/s sustained data rate. In this article, Benchmark Reviews tests performance and explores new features on the 4TB Seagate Desktop HDD.

If you frequent the storage review section here at TweakTown then you already know that I am fond of my Lenovo T61p portable, do it all, sits next to the bed when I sleep, workstation. A couple of weeks ago the T61p that has survived my brutality every day for the last three years was retired and replaced with a new Lenovo W701ds that features USB 3.0, dual monitors (on a notebook!!!!), dual 2.5'' HDD bays and shipped with a Lenovo branded Toshiba controlled SSD. Lenovo sells more notebooks than most SSD manufacturers sell drives and they were also one of the first notebook manufacturers to offer an SSD option to consumers.
