Over the last few years, the NAS market as a whole has been growing at a steady rate and in when we start to break things down and look at the rate of growth in the individual market sectors, the rate of sales in the consumer group has seen a far greater growth than any other market sector. Part of this growth is down to market exposure where users are seeing far more units on offer through both the retail and e-tail channels; however the price is a more crucial factor and this is what is now bringing the NAS concept into the limelight for the SOHO market. When we go back two to three years and look at the total cost of ownership; that’s the cost of purchasing the NAS itself along with drives to store data on then with the cost of running the unit – things were not looking that good and the price of one of a typical 4-bay system in some instances was easily a four-figure sum of money – in other words, simply too much of a cost to swallow considering you could easily buy a set of drives and whack them into your desktop system for a whole lot less.

It's been a while since we published a rackmount NAS review, but with our multi-client office test proven, more product reviews are coming soon.

Today we are looking at a NAS system from Thecus, the N4200ECO. This product seems to be tagged as a ‘green’ solution with the ‘ECO’ moniker, although the company certainly haven’t skimped on the hardware. The N4200ECO is shipped loaded with a 1.8GHz Intel Atom D525 processor with a generous 1GB of DDR3 memory – it can support up to four 2.5 or 3.5 inch drives. Even better – it has seen recent price drops, and is now available for £318 inc vat in a bare bones configuration.

Today for review I’ve got another NAS box, this one though is from Thecus and it’s their new N4200 model that features an Intel Dual Core Atom CPU and a nice 1 gig of ram. The N4200 has some other great features as well like the built-in battery backup system, along with dual displays on the front for monitoring system status and even for changing some of the settings without having to login to the admin section. The N4200 is fast, one of the fastest NAS boxes I’ve taken a look at, but it’s got plenty of other features going for it as well.. So read on to learn more…

Last year we reviewed the Thecus N4200 just days after its release. The N4200 is still to this day the only consumer NAS that offers dual status display screens, but more importantly, the only consumer NAS to include a battery backup system. When Thecus first marketed their N4200 a lot of emphasis was placed on the new dual display feature, but we felt that the battery backup feature was the real standout feature.
Storage
With the N4200 Pro, Thecus has further improved upon an already stable, high-performance four bay NAS. The upgraded hardware over the original N4200 make it a solid choice for a multiple user environment, and the mini-UPS and dual DOM features help avoid data loss in the event of a power outage or firmware corruption.
Storage
Thecus claim to be the storageleader in the NAS market, but can their N4200 Pro live up tothis reputation?
Storage
Thecus has brought another high-performance, reliable NAS to the table with the N4200. The robust hardware specs make it a solid choice for a multiple user environment, and the battery backup and dual DOM features help avoid data loss in the event of a power outage or firmware corruption.
