I have to admit that at first I wasn't really sure why Patriot would release the synchronous flash Pyro SE. At the start of 2011 Patriot announced and then delivered their 32nm Toshiba Toggle NAND drive for the high end, Wildfire. Then in an effort to claim some market share from the upper mainstream segment, Patriot released their Pyro SSD with IMFT asynchronous flash. Patriot's two tier approach kept things nice and tidy at a time when other manufacturers were releasing three product segments, a drive right in the middle with synchronous IMFT flash.

It’s not often that I credit a company’s business practices but this is going to be the exception for Matt Dawson and MyDigitalSSD who recently sent us three new SSDs for review, the Smart 256GB mSATA, the Bullet Proof 256GB value driven mSATA and the 512GB BP 3 2.5″ SSD. Today’s evaluation will be on the MyDigitalSSD Smart Series 256GB SATA 3 SSD and I guarantee this review will raise a few eyebrows. As a bit of a hint, let’s just say that things aren’t always as they seem.

The Hitachi/LG BH20L is capable of burning Blu-ray discs up to 6x. While it is not the fastest Blu-ray burner available, it is cost effective and reliable. Add in the ability to write CDs and DVDs, as well as to label discs with LightScribe, and this is a well rounded Blu-ray burner. If you are in the market for a Blu-ray burner, the Hitachi/LG BH20L is worth considering.

According to our tests, the MX200 SSDs are slightly faster than the existing MX100s, but the difference is negligible. Remarkably enough, the 250 GB model is faster than the 500 GB model in many different tests, which can be explained by the fact that Crucial has enabled Dynamic Write Acceleration functionality for the 250 GB model, but not for the 500 GB one. Crucial wants to use their MX200 series as a direct competitor to Samsung's 850 Evo series. As far as we're concerned, Samsung has won this fight: the 850 Evo drives boast better performance in almost every benchmark, as is reflected by their Hardware.Info SSD performance scores, and they are more energy efficient to boot.

Up on TSSDR’s Test Bench today we have a pre-release sample of Runcore’s new Rocket Air SATA 3 SSD and it is designed specifically for Mid-2012 Macbooks and similar ultrabooks that might fit the same SSD form factor. The introduction of such an SSD today is like a breath of fresh air for many MBA and ultrabook owners as ‘blade’ or ‘gumstick’ style SSDs just aren’t that available in the consumer market just yet.

Have you ever wondered what you could do with all of your high bandwidth, low latency RAM? Romex Software’s FancyCache has a suggestion for you: cache your drives. Caching has been all the rage lately in the SSD world. If there isn’t a caching solution to your liking now, chances are their will be soon enough although such options are the industries attempts to marry the low cost per GB of HDDs with the speed of SSDs. Our review today of Romex FancyCache is going to be something just a bit different!

The SMART Storage Systems XceedIOPS 2 eMLC SSD is the latest and greatest from the company with a long line of success. For SMART, who became privastely owned last year, this segment of the market is ‘old hat’. With all Tier 1 OEMs as customers, they are embedded deeply into the enterprise market. Now they are bringing the XceedIOPS 2 to the table, with Toshiba Toggle eMLC NAND and the LSI SandForce SF-2582 processor, to further their high endurance line of enterprise SSDs.

We all know (or at least most of us) that hard disk drives are much slower than solid state drives and so using the second just to house the primary OS (operating system) is always the ideal scenario. However no one can deny the splendid price/capacity ratio of HDDs especially now that we even have massive 4TB units available. Personally i don't feel I’ll ever be happy at least not until we finally see drives with capacities well exceeding the 10TB mark but in the meantime they highest available capacities will just have to do. A couple of months ago we checked the latest consumer oriented Deskstar 7K4000 4TB SATA III hard disk drive by Hitachi GST and as promised back then today on our test bench we have the latest enterprise class Ultrastar 7K4000 4TB SATA II hard disk drive.

If you already have USB 3.0 on your shiny new PC then it is time to start adding accessories that take advantage of USB 3.0's speed. There isn't a geek or layperson that I know who doesn't already have at least a small collection of thumb drives. They served their purpose well, but it is now time to start retiring all of those small, slow drives and step up to a single, large, fast USB 3.0 thumb drive.
