A couple weeks ago, I was talking with a couple colleagues about DSLR cameras, and invariably the topic about high speed SD and CF memory cards came up. What we wanted to know is if a high speed memory card such as the Lexar Professional 1000x CF (Compact Flash) card will actually perform better than a SanDisk Extreme 400x CF card under typical real world conditions. When looking at the price difference between the two cards...

We compared the performance of seven different solid state drives (SSDs) on the 128 GB range based on MLC technology from Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, Intel, Mushkin, Patriot and Western Digital.

OCZ Technology launched their Vertex 3 solid state drive based on the second-generation LSI-SandForce SF-2281 processor back in early 2011, making it a familiar storage product among high-performance enthusiasts. Two years later they've revisited the popular design, and made several improvements. Now available with 20nm Synchronous Multi-Level Cell (MLC) NAND flash components, Vertex 3.20 is designed to offer better performance for less cost. Vertex 3.20 arrives in 120GB and 240GB capacities, both offering 550 MB/s reads and 520 MB/s writes. In this article Benchmark Reviews tests the 120GB OCZ Vertex 3.20 SSD (model VTX3-25SAT3-120G.20), and compare it against the fastest SATA 6GB/s storage solutions.

Hot on the heels of our last series of SSD reviews, we're featuring another mini-roundup. This time, we're looking at four drives in the 120-128GB capacity range. Focusing on performance on both the PC and Mac platforms, we have SSDs from Crucial, Kingston, OCZ and Other World Computing. While the first three names are well known in the computer hardware industry, the last has had a long history in the Mac oriented hardware upgrade market.

RAID, the final frontier. These are the voyages of...ah, who am I kidding? Choosing to implement RAID today isn’t embarking on a mission to boldly go where no one has gone before. This technology has literally been around for years, and today RAID support can be found within most operating systems, integrated on motherboards, or easily added to any system as a 3rd party controller for almost nothing (quick search on Amazon yields controllers for less than $30). With its wide availability, you may find yourself at some point contemplating taking the plunge and configuring a RAID setup on your own system. However, before doing so, there are some things you should consider.

The DT01ACA300 3TB drive from Toshiba features good performances and are in fact rebadged Hitachi HDS723030BLE640 units, a newer version compared to the drives we have tested in the past (as external enclosures). The DT01ACA300 are priced quite good and we would like to recommend them for home users which need more storage space.

Our review today is going to examine the Memoright FTM Plus 6Gbps 240GB SSD; a ‘SandForce Driven’ SSD capable of read/write performance in excess of 500MB/s. Memoright focuses primarily on enterprise sales, however, they were one of the first to release a consumer SSD back in 2007. Submission of their MR25.1 128GB SLC SSD for review was our first introduction and we were floored at its MSRP, at that time, of $3500. Solid state drives have come down just a bit since then.

It was just over a year ago that we reviewed the Super Talent 50GB RC8 ‘SandForce Driven’ USB 3 Flash Drive and made the call of it being the fastest flash drive on the planet. Our prediction then was that it would be a natural progression that, soon enough, we would be booting complete systems off of just this type of media. Imagine, simply plugging your flash drive in and accessing your desktop environment anywhere.
Our analysis today looks at the Super Talent USB3 Express RC8 100GB Flash Drive and, not only does it easily command bragging rights as the most powerful large capacity Flash Drive on the planet but also, the RC8 is one of the very few certified for the Microsoft Enterprise ‘Windows To Go’ Operating Environment.
