Kingston, a leading memory vendor has just announced their first USB 3.0 flash drive almost a year later than the world first USB 3.0 flash drive in Nov 2009. This is understandable as it takes time for the market to accept and acknowledge all the new technologies before they go into mass production with much affordable price. Today let us have a deep dive on Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 flash drive.

The Touro Desk Pro 3TB USB 3.0 External HDD from Hitachi is a product with enough storage space (backup purposes) for most home users, provides high read/write transfer speeds thanks to the 7200RPM drive inside, to the USB 3.0 interface, and for extra value the manufacturer has included a free backup software, along with 3GB of free space “in the cloud”. The online storage space can be expanded up to 250GB, via subscription.

Kingston has rolled out their SSDNow V+100 SSD series which they claim is 25% faster than its predecessor even though it utilizes the same Toshiba controller. This drive has TRIM support for Windows 7 users and 'always-on' garbage collection for those running older operating systems like Windows Vista and XP. Check out the article to see how the SSDNow V+100 does in both synthetic and real world benchmarks!

As NAND Flash technology has continued to develop and Solid State Drive manufacturers push the envelope of controller speed, we have seen performance figures that approach, and even bump against, the threshold of SATA 3Gb/s bandwidth limitations. Thus the need for a new standard, SATA 6Gb/s, is making its way into design specifications of new hardware. However to date there has been only one solid state srive manufacturer to bring a SATA 6Gb/s product to market, Crucial with their C300 RealSSD series. Join me as I take a closer look at the Crucial 128Gb C300 RealSSD SATA 6Gb/s drive.

When we last looked at an OCZ product, the Vertex 2, we awarded it our Gold Award and scored it 9/10 and 10/10 in every aspect. So when we saw that they were one of the first manufacturers to release an SSD based on USB 3.0 technology we were keen to try it out. Today we have that SSD connected to our test bench and will be putting it through a selection of tests, including the all-important real world transfer test to find out how it compares to USB 2.0 based mechanical and flash based devices.

While a single Plextor M5 Pro Xtreme SSD is quick, having 2 in a RAID 0 setup is screaming fast. Team 2 Plextor M5 Pro Xtreme 256GB SSDs up with a Highpoint RocketRAID 642L 6Gb/s Controller and you've got a winning combo!

Other World Computing (or OWC) is an Apple specialty store that also offers their own branded products. The company showed up on our radar when we first started seeing SandForce controlled SSDs entering the market. Even now only a small handful of the dozens of companies that are planning to offer SandForce SSDs have been able to bring them to market. OWC was immune to whatever problems other manufacturers are having and has a product on the market now, but that is only half of the story.

Over the last couple months we took on the mission of finding the perfect HDD desktop docking station. The first two products we looked at were low cost units that were only limited by the amount of bandwidth our motherboard was able to provide. After that we moved on to the Thermaltake BlacX 5G, another USB 3.0 docking station that included some great accessories, an extra long cable that made moving our test system from under the desk less painful and was also able to deliver amazing performance. Now that we've seen the best USB 3.0 has to offer, a new docking station has taken over our test bench. The Thermaltake BlacX Duet forgoes USB 3.0 entirely and sticks to a tried and true eSATA / USB 2.0 combination, but that's not what the duo in Duet is about.
