Toshiba stirs up the market with its latest SSHD. The MQ01ABFH offers tremendous performance at a price point that's hard to ignore.
It is no secret that the popularity of mSATA SSDs is being pushed around just a bit by M.2 PCIe design. M.2 SSDs may even tempt us with a great deal more power for the punch and capacity down the road. What M.2 doesn’t have, as of yet, is just about every popular ultra book in the world in their pocket and that is where mSATA SSDs feel secure. It is kind of like the SATA 2 to SATA 3 move made in SSDs where, as much as SATA 3 is faster and makes sense, 99.8% of the population uses SATA 2. You can imagine that we were more than a bit surprised when our expected receipt of a 512GB Toshiba Client notebook SSD not only included a 256GB mSATA form factor as well, but also, we think this is the first official shot of their new Client M.2 PCIe SSD in the wild; it being 512GB as well. Today, we are going to provide you with a bit of an exclusive look at a more ‘consumer directed’ variation of a new driver-less PCIe SSD, the recently announced Mach Extreme MX-Express driver-less PCIe 2.0 x2 SSD. The MX-Express is a LSI SandForce driven PCIe SSD, available in 128, 256, 512 and 1TB capacities and has listed speeds of 800MB/s for both read and write data transfer, with up to 100,000IOPS. Warranty for the MX-Express is 2 years and availability is much more prevalent in Europe than North America, although we did find availability with My Digital Discount in the USA.

Following on from my recent review of Synology’s DS213j 2-bay system, I’ve been invited to take a look at a system that is more geared for the SOHO (small office home office_ market. This is the DS414 and for those who understand the naming system that Synology have adopted, it is possible to recognise that this is the newer version of the DS413.
Up to this point, there has not been much information to be found in the open about this system, but to give a quick run down in comparison to the DS413 the identical looking DS414 offers up a better CPU, better RAID controller and at a price that is more competitive. There have been rumours circulating that this system will be home to a CPU capable of transcoding media on the fly, but I can confirm this is not the case. Thankfully there is a separate system that is launching very soon which does have this capability and a review for this will appear in due course.
