Let's take a look on the performance of the first SATA-600 hard disk drive to arrive on the market, Barracuda XT from Seagate.

The BlacX Duet we have on hand today is the third in the BlacX series of hard drive docking stations from Thermaltake. We first saw the BlacX at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show and got our hands on a review sample a month later. We came away from that review very impressed with the concept and implementation, although USB-only transfer left us wanting more. The second coming of the BlacX, dubbed the SE version, featured a 4-port USB hub but still failed to deliver eSATA transfer capability. With the latest release of the BlacX, Thermaltake has done away with the 4-port USB hub, added a second slot that allows for two drives to be mounted simultaneously and finally added eSATA compatibility. This is looking more like the BlacX we hoped for nearly two years ago.

With Intel's second generation controller and 34nm MLC NAND flash memory, many might argue the internals are the best presently on the market. The read performance is definitely impressive, while the write performance will leave something to be desired. Once you see the price you may be willing to make the compromise in order to jump from a traditional hard drive to a SSD.

The BlacX Duet is a very simple yet effective product for quickly accessing data on any two hard drives. And when I say any two drives, I mean it in a literal sense. The docking station supports all 2.5” and 3.5” SATA drives up to 2TB, so the chances of incompatibility with any current drives you have are slim to none. Furthermore, installation is completely tool-free and the absence of fans allow for silent operation.

For a good example of the features a modern optical drive should have, look no further than the Lite-On iHAS424 DL-DVD burner. It's got everything you'd expect from a DVD-writer, including dual-layer DVD writing and reading, compatibility with both + and - formats, as well as support for lightscribe label burning if you have photosensitive media. Of course, it'll also read and write CD-Rs and CD-RWs.

Today for review I’ve got the Verbatim Tuff-Clip 8GB USB drive. This USB drive resembles a carabineer style clip that you can attach to most anything. The drive comes with software to create two partitions as well, one secure and one public so you can hide any important data so it can’t be accessed without a password. I’ve put it up against a few other 8gb USB drives I’ve got on hand for comparison and the Tuff-Clip performs well actually..

Today for review I’ve got a little NAS box from Qnap called the TS-219P. It supports two 3.5” or 2.5” SATA hard drives and is truly feature packed with the ability to become your main network storage device at home and while on the go. Not only is it for storage and backups, you can stream from it, use it as a mini-surveillance system, a web sever, or even a stand alone torrent machine.

RAID is a very useful and inexpensive way to increase performance on your machine. RAID is also a very useful and inexpensive way to increase performance with your external data. The AXUS FiT 500 is a great product to do just that with easy RAID management and configuration, and using eSATA it's almost just as fast as an internal RAID. Check out the AXUS FiT 500, you wont regret it.

We all have at least one type of portable memory storage unit laying around the house filled with music, work, pictures, videos or what have you. But now those guys from Sandisk have created the first flash drive with a "Backup" button. With no wires and no fuss, see if they made a breakthrough in storing important electronic data safely and with ease.
