Over the last couple of years we've seen companies try and merge the two technologies together. These hybrid solutions have come in many shapes and sizes and for several different markets. One of the first to launch was from Adaptec with their MaxCache designed for enterprise environments. LSI soon followed suit and released CacheCade and after that we were greeted with products from SilverStone (the HDDBoost) and finally there was Intel's attempt with Rapid Storage Technology.

Kingston have long been known for producing high quality memory products, from laptop/desktop memory to flash drives and SSDs. What we have today falls into the flash drive category. It's a 32GB USB 3.0 version of the DataTraveler series, the DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0. Available in 16, 32 and 64GB versions and boasting some pretty quick read/write speeds it certainly looks impressive but how does it really do? Let's take a look.

In the video above we also got a look at the A-DATA S599 100GB SandForce SF-1200 SSD, which Chris tested and wrote about a few days ago. They say that 'seeing is believing' and after checking out the performance of this beast of an SSD in person, it really is a pretty remarkable storage device. The drive that we saw being tested was able to achieve even a little above its spec."

We have already started testing USB 3.0 products and with our upcoming thumb drive round up testing starting today, we have many more to come. The USB 3.0 products have performed very well, but their high cost and bulk will keep them from penetrating the market quickly.

Portability. From mobile phones to netbooks, MP3 players to tablets, manufacturers are offering consumers more and more ways to work and play on the move. When it comes to data portability the traditional mechanical hard drive has two main competitors; the flash drive and "the cloud". As flash drive capacity has increased and price decreased the ubiquitous thumb drive has become the preferred method to store and share documents and small media files. For the more technically minded online or "cloud" storage solutions like Dropbox, Mozy or SkyDrive offer access to files from anywhere with an internet connection. Of course the speed of the cloud storage is dependant on your 'net connection.

Over the past few months, solid state drives have come down significantly in price, making them much more cost effective than they've been previously. Today, we are going to look at one of Samsung's latest SSDs, the 830 Series 256 GB, to see how it fares against the competition.

The TS-469L is another powerful NAS from QNAP aimed at home and small business users, equipped with a HDMI interface that can be connected to our Full-HD TV. Thanks to its HD Station function and it’s modules, we can transform the server into a fully-featured media center for browsing the web, playing media content with XBMC or even for navigating through the Turbo NAS OS interface, without the need of using a PC. As extra bundle, we can acquire separately the useful QNAP Media Center remote or extra RAM for a total of 3GB.

We’ve done a number of tests and the results are clear, the OCZ
Agility 2 with the SandForce 1200 Controller is a winner. The sequential
and random read and write performance is spectacular. We achieved 285MB/s
read and 275 MB/s write – this was with an operating system installed, not
just when using the Agility 2 as a secondary drive. For those who want
nothing but speed should certainly consider the OCZ Agility 2 in any one of
the capacities ranging from 40GB to 480GB! With the aggressive pricing from
OCZ, you won’t be disappointed.
