Desktop docks are nothing new. We first looked at the Thermaltake BlacX two years ago and love the idea of being able to use raw HDDs without opening our computer cases. If you are someone like me with several drives sitting around, the idea is brilliant. The early models had a few shortfalls, though; mainly their reliance on the aging USB 2.0 protocol and placing the power button on the back of the dock. The later issue was due to the urge to save money at the R&D level. With the button at the back you had to reach around the dock which was kind of a pain in the butt.
When it comes to traditional platter drives, the most innovative company on the block is Seagate. Seagate has many firsts under their belt, more than what I could possibly go into in an article about a single drive. Adding to the long string of innovative products is the new Seagate Constellation.2 Series of products.
Earlier in the year OCZ Technology announced their plans to acquire Indilinx, the company responsible for bringing some of the first real consumer friendly (i.e. low cost) SSDs to market in 2009. The first fruit from that tree has hit our lab and it sports a new controller from Indilinx and a new era for OCZ. OCZ is now in a unique position, no longer just another RAM turned SSD cloner, but a fully fledged member of the small club that steers technology rather than just rides along. In our next State of Solid State, my annual Q4 editorial that speculates on the year to come based on a little fact and a lot of rumor, we'll go into what Indilinx brings to OCZ's table. Today, though, we're going to focus on the new Octane SSD and what it brings to your table.
The DiskStation DS412+ is another high performance NAS from Synology which allows a total of 4 HDDs/SSDs to be installed for enough storage space and are cooled properly with the two included 92mm fans, which are also silent during normal operation. On a single LAN connection, the unit maxes out the read/write transfer speeds and the “beast” is really unleashed when used in enterprise environments, with the “Link Aggregation” feature enabled.

Today, HardwareLogic has the Imation M-Class 128GB SSD for review, and is one of Imation's many entries into the SSD market.

Over the next hour we were briefed on a startling simple storage device that meets every need we could conceive of for a product in this price category. The two most interesting things about the EX4 are its simplicity to use and staggering number of powerful. We have tested storage devices for years at TechwareLabs. So many devices and designs that its easy to lose count. TheEX4 immediately presents itself out of the box with a professional appearance, good design, and good price.
